A few months ago I saw a youtube video of a guy opening spam cans with an angle grinder. In fact the video might have been posted here in one of the Mosin threads. Personally I use a can opener.

Oxy-acetylene torch. Only way to do it right.

Well, maybe a plasma cutter would work ok.

What he says about those cans being sharp... oooh so very true.

I had tossed one under my bench, and was fishing around for something else under there the other night. Grabbed that can to (thoughtlessly) toss it over by the back door so I can take it out t to the garbage... IMMEDIATELY sliced my damn index finger down to the bone. Bled like a stuck pig.

If I don't have one of those can openers that come with it I just take a flat head and hammer, punch a hole and use pliers to rip a strip off the top and peel it back far enough to take the ammo out.

I've got a can opener for them thankfully. The only thing that annoys me with the 54r cans vs the 5.45 cans I also buy is the paint. The 54r paint chips off into thousands of little sharp pieces and they fly everywhere when opening a can. Probably lead-based too yuck. The paint on 5.45 cans is flexible enough to bend with the lid and not chip.

Lmao. I was going to suggest this too.

A quick tip in all seriousness...your average can opener around the house WON'T work.

In Soviet Russia, can opens you!

+1 on the "Can opens you" joke.

In all seriousness, those spam cans are tough to open and like any can the edges are very sharp.

The first case I bought had a can opener that did not work. Used a chisel to open the cans. The second case had a good can opener. The empty cans make good brass containers....chris3
