"Backdoor" Ammo/Gun Regulation

I'd be interested to know what their historical stockpiling habits have been, and whether there is a recent spike.

Don't forget though that government agencies often spend their budgets on stuff they don't need just to ensure that their budget doesn't get reduced next year. They have to 'prove' that they 'need' the money, especially during times of strict budget cuts.

It happens with office supplies, why not ammo?

In fact, it would be interesting to see whether they have been 'stockpiling' other more mundane things before jumping to conclusions.

They're buying up all the 22LR so they can arm the TSA.

If you had an unlimited budget, how much ammo would you buy?

I have a hard time wrapping my arms around this theory.

First of all I have read reports that the ammo purchases are for a five year period so the actual number of yearly amounts would only be 1/5 of the total.

Second while the word "billion" round purchase sounds hugh what is the weekly/monthly/yearly totals of cartridges manufactured in the United States and how much ammo is imported into the country?

Third ammo supply for some cartridges such .223 has been tight for some time due to our military combat needs.

Fourth we have the best gun and ammo salesman ever to come down the road pushing sales by declaring war on legal gun owners.

Patently silly idea.

Where's all the .22lr going? The .38 special and .357 magnum? The 30.06?

How many different agencies are part of the DHS? USCG, Border Patrol, ICE, FPS, Air Marshals, Secret Service, etc. That's a lot of people with guns and training and supply of ammunition is pretty big.

I don't believe they're buying it all up to keep it out of our hands. I do however question why domestic agencies feel that they need enough ammo to wage war for over twenty years.

Putting on my tinfoil hat for a moment, the other calibers could be being bought by people who can't find their first choice of ammo because the government bought it all up.

I still don't buy it though.

I don't think they are getting ALL of it but it wouldn't surprise me if they tried some stuff like described. The quantity is beyond what they need on hand.

Does everybody remember Obama's idea of having all ammo loaded with special primers that have an expiration date to prevent stockpiling, back in 2008?

gun control, no. training yet another police/swat team for yet another agency is what you should be concerned about.

I had this very idea a couple months ago; I figured it was the only explanation since DHS et. al. already has enough goons, guns, and anthrax to kill all of us ten times over. Maybe they're just killing two birds with one stone (they are gutting the legitimate military that isn't particularly fond of the executive, after all), but more likely they are using our own tax dollars to deny us ammunition. Also makes the ammo/gun manufacturers even more dependant upon govt sales, and more likely to deny service to civvies (much like FNH is want to do these days). I sure haven't seen any Winchester PAC ads denouncing proposed controls on their ammo...

Even more likely, they are simply buying it because their contracts allow them to buy a durable commodity at ~1/4 the market price--with guaranteed delivery! Wouldn't you?

The government agencies all have terrible boating accidents in the gulf and lose all their weaponry and ammo, so they have to have it replaced every year.

Interesting point in that article. I would like to point out that even if DHS wasn't buying all the other calibers that are disappearing, it would still affect availability. Think about it, if you were a FFL and you ordered 1.6 Billion rounds of .40 and 9mm. Even a large company like ATK would have to slow down production of other calibers if the time frame was tight to meet the contract on time. Is it the only quill in the hat? No. Was it an intentional purchase to dry up ammo supplies? Maybe. I wouldn't put it past the government to think of something like this but I am not imagining some evil mastermind in a dark room. Good be just as innocent as some clerk ordering the ammo with a "happy" side effect for the antis.

The American people purchase more than 10 times that amount every year. Plus, the DHS 1.6bn purchase was just for .40 cal. I'm not sure that's really such a big deal, since it's a half-decade fulfilment order.

if you aren't sure whether 1.6 billion is a lot, I think iread somewhere how it is way more than the ammo our whole military uses in a large timeframe. I don't really think they are creating a shortage on purpose since this conspiracy has been floating around for a while, but if it really is just to blow budget money then it should still be investigated as too why so much taxpayer money is being used. This also gets me thinking that if their main supplier is federal, maybe we should get federal to jump on board with other companies that are refusing to sell to government agencies as protest.

It's a lot, over a long period of time. In the grand scheme of things, though, 1.6bn rounds is a drop in the ocean. As far as investigations go... Save for whistleblowers and such, I don't think we'll be seeing any more of those.
