6.5x55 vs. Barbary Sheep

Couple shots of a Barbary I got yesterday. Rifle is a Sako 85 Finnlight shooting Privi Partizan 6.5x55 with a Zeiss Conquest scope. This makes the third one I've gotten with this round, and these animals are tough.

A fun Saturday morning. Did I mention I like living in New Mexico?

I have used the 139gr Prvi for deer before, they perform fantastic for such cheap ammo, just not quite as well as my ballistic tip handloads with an extra 500fps. Prvi brass is superb, I have reloaded it many times with no cracked necks or loose primer pockets even at full modern action pressures. Prvi groups pretty good too, about 3/4" in my Tikka.

I also have gotten a .75" group with that round, and I'm not the greatest shot. Good enough that I see no reason to handload. I've heard the Privi ammo is hotter than US ammo in this caliber, what do you think about that Kachok? Something to do with our excess of lawyers not wanting to blow up any old Swedish Mausers.

I'll be using that ammo on a cow elk hunt next season.

Maybe a touch hotter then Winchester Power points but not much, the Sweed is worth reloading even with the great accuracy and value of Prvi ammo which BTW I buy by the 100rd case. If you do ever decide to load for the Sweed RL19 and 22 are your best friend, if not save me your brass I love that stuff

My 6.5x55 is the tightest shooting rifle I have ever seen, even better then long heavy barreled guns I have shot. 129gr and 140gr SSTs are the best shooters in mine.

My wife hunts with a custom Browning in 6.5mm Swede. We load the 140 grain Nosler Partition bullet for Wyoming elk hunts. 6.5mm Swede is a keeper!

Good looking trophy sheep there.

The Sweed is hella good with factory ammo, but simply amazing with handloads. 120gr ballistic tips over a max load of RL19 are my favorite hunting load, and 129gr SSTs over a mild charge of RL19 for my match load, and 140gr SSTs over 46.5gr of RL22 for my bigger then deer hunting. Hard to find anything my Sweed won't shoot, super accurate rifle. Interestingly my Tikka is my only rifle that seems to prefer tipped bullets over my Game Kings and other soft points.

im jealous.......

im trying to get stationed out west or in alaska... but my new job is brining me right back to the same base... ugh

i think i may be the only person in the military to say i hate being stationed in florida

^ Yeah I would think so, look on the bright side though you could have gotten sent to Schwinfurt Germany or Korea. Horrible weather, 45 day FTXs, and no hunting or fishing for years on end. So very happy to be out of that forever.

My brother HATES hot weather. When he was in the Army, he was sent to Honduras. Daytime highs were over 110 deg. Then he got orders for deployment in Panama. He still hadn't had his "mandatory" deployment to So. Korea so he volunteered to go there instead. When they found out he hated hot weather, they denied his request and sent him to the Sinai Desert.

There's a lesson there somewhere. :0
