Is Replacing a Hammer in a Colt Cobra a DIY or a take it to a Smith Job?

Just going to want to replace the bobbled hammer on a Cobra I'm getting and I want to know if it's something I can do or IIRC due to indexing issues, something that I should take to a smith?
 
I've taken my cobra apart and put it back together several times and never had indexing problems. No special tools are necessary, just a bit of mechanical aptitude (as with any firearm). YMMV.

Interesting, I had been under the impression that it was a more complex action. Any links to tutorials (video or written) on how to do it? I couldn't find anything on the Cobra.
 
It could be an easy DIY drop-in job. Or not. If not, trying to do it could get you into some very deep trouble.

Admittedly, I never tried to put a DIFFERENT hammer in, and no tutorial, sorry. I just take things apart and figure them out as I go.

I've only taken the "walk of shame" twice, though... oddly enough, both with the same Taurus. No fault of the gun, obviously :( :D
 
I'm completely comfortable with total disassembly/reassembly/fitting of new parts to 1911 pattern pistols, S&W revolvers/pistols, Ruger revolvers/pistols, AR-15/M-16, M-1, M-14, Mauser rifles, Savage rifles, Remington rifles, Colt Mk III and Mk V revolvers. I can reassemble a 1911 from a pile-o-parts down to and including reassembly of the MS housing guts, etc while blindfolded. Well you get the picture. I run away very fast from Colt D/E/I frame revolvers and their antecedents. They are complex actions and require an intimate knowledge of how each part interacts with every other part and how to properly fit those parts so as not to disturb the fit/interaction of the other parts. Seek a specialist. There are few left so you list will be short. The problem with the Colt Cobra is getting a hammer that hasn't already been fitted to another gun.

You better have the Colt shop manual I linked earlier.

If it is "not" and someone has already "fitted" the hammer, even the shop manual isn't going to do any good.
