Seriously. This is getting outta hand.

http://www.courant.com/news/politics/hc-malloy-guns-plan-0222-20130221,0,366674.story

Cliffs notes:
Governor Malloy has put out his proposed list of gun control laws he wants to ram through before,
"we run a risk of letting this crticial moment in history pass us by.
" I'll interpret that for those who don't know how to speak fluent politician. What he said in layman's terms is,
"Everyone is all riled up over the tragedy here in CT. before everyone stops crying and starts thinking logically, I want to get some illogical and unconstitutional legislation passed."

His proposed legislation includes the following:
1)
Ban magazines of over 10 rounds...On magazines, gun owners would have until Oct. 1 to sell out of state or turn in to police the magazines they currently own.
2)
closing the "gun show loophole" by mandating that anyone buying from a private seller supply proof they have undergone a federal background check, which can be obtained from a federally licensed firearm dealer.
3)
The governor would expand the definition of an assault weapon by reducing the number of "military-style features" to one, down from four.
4)
Malloy's expanded ban would contain a "grandfather" provision enabling people who legally purchased assault weapons prior to the new law to keep them, but only after a new permitting process that the governor's communications director, Andrew Doba, said would be "intensive" and would require owners to undergo training. If an owner wanted to sell such a weapon, it would have to be out of state.
5)
The governor would require background checks "prior to the transfer of any firearm in any circumstance" ...That would include guns bought at a gun show or in a private sale.

Now, these are just his proposals. Not actual law. BUT it's what he is going to try to cram through, and so far he has met with very little resistance.

Considering that we are nestled right in the middle of New York, New Joisy, and Massachusetts, CT has had relatively good (aka relaxed) gun laws. It's one of the reasons I chose to plant my roots here when I had the chance (I was born and raised here but didn't leave when I could have). But the fact that the Sandy Hook shooting happened here in CT has totally changed the tune of our state. Not that it was ever GREAT for gun owners, but it was always certainly quite tolerable.

I saw it coming, but there's nothing like just seeing it written out in a local CT paper. I'm really ticked off. Doing all I can to write, and call everyone who matters. This is an inexcusable situation.

The heartlands of the Revolution have come full circle back to the Royal Occupier. I'm sorry, sir, best of luck to you and yours, fight the good fight! What does your state legislature look like, good, bad, indifferent?

Why do people in the North East and on the West Coast keep electing these people???

Because the majority of these soccer moms were educated in the public school systems after LBJ's Great Society took control. They have never studied civics, have no real understanding of what their rights are (except for what they are told by their news outlets) and believe that guns are only for criminals and police.....that is, until one of them gets raped.....

So the next Adam Lanza would need to pass a background check before murdering his mother and stealing her guns?

I'm sure I'll sleep better at night knowing that.

I already have plans to move to the Brattleboro, VT or Winchester, NH area if the mag or rifle bans pass. I don't care if it takes me 90 minutes to get to work, I am NOT surrendering my property or "proving" my worth to own the most popular rifle in the country.

Up here in northern Connecticut there is a higher concentration of representatives on our side, but they are still the minority. The frustration and feeling of helplessness is too much.

Actually, oneounceload, Connecticut has one of the highest levels of educational attainment in the country -- 15.5% of the population has an advanced degree, which much better than the national average of 10.3%. Massachusetts is 16,4%, Maryland 16%, and D.C. 28%.

On the other hand, Texas has 8.5%, Alabama 7.7%, Tennessee 7.4%, Mississippi 7.1%, and Arkansas 6,1%.

Now, who ain't gettin' their schoolin' and ain't lernin' right??

"Arrest them for treason, try them, find them guilty, and carry out the penalty as prescribed by law"

remind me again, oneounceload -- what is the penalty for treason?

what exactly are you advocating here on "The High Road"??

I'm not saying I agree with what CT is doing -- but you are calling for democratically elected members of state government to be put to death because you disagree with their public policy position on one issue, is that right??

Advanced degrees only means they spent more time in the Academy for Leftist Studies. They've been exposed to this hogwash longer and to a greater extent than those with a simple Associates degree or High school education.

Most Masters degrees and PHD programs don't teach civics or fundamental/ Constitutional rights anymore than any other schooling.

Gee, let's see - which states are the ones that are broke, are voting to eliminate your rights, and think everyone should hold hands and sing Kumbaya?

Gee, where did I say that? Seems YOU are though.....who said anything about that? and just how do you know whether they were legitimately elected in a fair election?

But that's another thread for another forum

Perhaps you should read exactly WHAT the penalties are before assuming someone said something against the law

Since maybe you couldn't find it:

United States Code at 18 U.S.C. § 2381 states "whoever, owing allegiance to the United States, levies war against them or adheres to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort within the United States or elsewhere, is guilty of treason and shall suffer death, or shall be imprisoned not less than five years and fined under this title but not less than $10,000; and shall be incapable of holding any office under the United States."

Hope that clears it up for you

I suppose, but I'm darn glad Arizona better fit's into the lesser group. Rednecks know how to survive, while the advanced degrees folks discover that what they think they know doesn't always work. Unfortunately its some of that 28% in Washington that have got our country into such dificult times. :uhoh:

Right on. ;) Most people these days with advanced degrees have them in fields which do little to truly advance the state of civilization. Disclaimer: I have an advanced degree -- but being from Arkansas I'm not supposed to, I guess. I spent a decade in higher education -- teaching, administration -- seeing people rack up debt they'll never repay for an "education" that they did not need or will never use. I learned long ago that degrees, and advanced degrees, have little to do with how smart people are. Some of the dumbest people I know are over-educated.

Did anybody else note that the other states of supposed smart folks -- Mass, MD, and DC -- have some of the dumbest gun laws around? Whereas Texas, Tennessee, and Arkansas (three I have personal knowledge of) are rather enlightened when it comes to firearms.

So who's smart, and who's dumb here?

I really understand how some of the folks in NY felt and still feel. I did not vote for any legislator that is supporting these proposed laws, yet here I am in this terrible position. I have to decide if I want to be an outlaw and keep my rightfully owned property (standard cap magazines) or surrender/sell them to ensure that my wife won't have to visit me in the clink.
Never mind the fact that as an attorney, I stand to lose my license if I get busted with such evil contraband. I've been in a funk all day over this, just going between sad and angry.

erm.. guys... first off, what is with the hate on advanced degrees?
Seems off topic, and also divisive. All of the people who are the most influential fighters for our rights have advanced degrees.
Just like we don't want to generalize about allegiances to the 2A cause based on the titles of Democrat and Republican, let's not alienate those with advanced degrees. (says the guy with his JD hanging on the wall.)
Either way, totally off topic.

He didn't decide the penalty for treason. I am not sure this is clear treason, but it is certainly unconstitutional, and therefore null and void. There is also caselaw that says charging a fee and requiring a permit-which of course means it is no longer a right- to exercise your rights is unconstitutional, and null and void.
A state may not impose a charge for the enjoyment of a right granted by the federal constitution

CT is already in violation due to the pistol permit.

OK, ACP, if everybody up there is so smart, then what's all the crying about your current situation in that elite progressive liberal utopia...

I'll take less education and remain happy in a Conservative Red State any day of the week. One thing is for sure, it won't be CT that holds the line on 2nd Amendment Rights. Wish you guys the best - maybe with all that schooling you can figure out how to deal with politicians who forget the Constitutional oath that took with the office.

All of the liberal gun grabbing states and constituents are showing their true colors now, this goes the same for the opposite. There are some states out there like mine, Texas, who are fighting the good fight. We know who you are now. Take notes people, I am.

ACP:

We mostly grew up around KC MO and KS, but something caught my attention when moving south.
Those boys in southern states seem to volunteer pretty quickly to fight for their country, though CT might also have its fair share for its population.

Now, it might jest be... that those larger heaps.. of.. M.A. degrees in Comparative Philosophy or PhDs in Modern French Lit., way up there in CT trump patriotism and personal risk.:)

Yeah, like it would have prevented Columbine ya know huh. Oh, wait a minute, NICS started in November 1998 and Columbine was April 1999. Hmmmm, you mean NICS doesn't work. What about Virginia Tech, surely they would prevent that one too right??

We feel your pain here in CO. Please provide the contact info for members here to urge your congresscritters and governor to not do this.

I have family in CT, I do visit them. I won't not go there, but I'll let your govt know that I'll make darn sure to spend as little money as possible in the state when I'm there if they push this through.
