Why would anybody buy new these days

New or used

I was just at the LGS looking around for a way to spend my bonus and tax return,as I was checking out revolvers and a brand new stainless GP100 was in the case for 649. I don't get why anyone would drop that kind of cash when used ones are 350 to 450 used and most revolvers Ruger,S&W,Colt are pretty much indestructible unless abused. When I got home I went through my receipts I keep in my safe with my guns and out of 16 only 3 were bought new. The only reasons I can imagine someone would dump that kind of cash is they are either uninformed new buyers or the one they want can't be found used.
 
If they fix the second option, I'd want my vote removed as neither would then apply to me. If I tried to find a used SR1911, I think I'd have to wait longer than the year and a half it took to find the new one!
 
Sometimes used simply means unaffordable or no longer required under the previous owner's recent circumstances.

I've bought used many times and have never gotten a bad gun.

Thats why I never hand the guy money and walk away with my gun before I.....look at it. Test it for functionality.
Shucks, even on online auctions, you don't have to accept the transfer if you don't like the condition of the gun.

I have bought 25+ used guns in the last two years. I have bought 1 new gun in that time. I have bought 20+ guns off the internet in that time, and I have refused transfer of 1 because It was not as described.
I have been pleasantly surprised at the guns condition being better than described a number of times.

The only time I have gotten guns that I wasn't happy with and found out after the fact were duds, were at gunshows. The only time I've ever gotten rid of unwanted firearms was at a gunshow, usually as trade for something I wanted.

I honestly see very few affordable new guns these days that I want. Everything that I would want is very expensive because its crafted and not cnc'd, everything I can afford is soulless plastic or just plain cheaply made.

I buy to collect much of the time, and as such don't see many new collectibles.

I guess I have been lucky. As I think I have only bought 2 guns that were brand new.

Heck, I own quite a few firearms that are older than me, so....it would be impossible for me to have acquired them new.

As far as firearms that I could buy either new or used...it depends on the difference in cost, and if I can find one in the condition I want it to be in whether I buy it used or new.
 
Main reasons why I prefer to buy new when not looking for a collector example: I know the history and that I am the only end user, and it helps to drive the firearms economy.
 
I buy used when I can. Used are normally a much better deal. I have bought lots of guns used and have had maybe one I wasn't completely happy with.
 
I am always looking for a good deal and usually new or used doesn't matter to me, as long as it is a good deal. I have only sold two guns my whole life, so I don't worry about potential resale value. The majority of my guns are worth more than I paid for them, even the ones I bought new.

I still have my first Colt 1911 that I bought new in 1989. It's worth about 40% more now than I paid for it new. Similarly, when I bought my new Colt Lightweight Commander about six years ago, I couldn't find a used one, and when the dealer offered to let me order one for $30 over cost if I paid for it all up-front, it was a no-brainer. I got it cheaper than the last used one I saw.
 
I buy used on impulse, checking over the racks of used guns at the LGS or pawn shop and find a good deal on something I could use.

I buy new when I have a plan in mind, do some research, and set out to purchase a particular make and model.
 
I wouldn't buy a used gun unless I couldn't find it new. Nothing against used guns, I just prefer new over used, with just about anything. I like to know that if it breaks, it was something I did. I think of it as buying peace-of-mind, as relevant to the product, at least.

If that means I buy 1/3 as many guns, so be it.
 
I buy guns new and I've bought guns used; it all depends on the gun. I've never had an issue with my used guns and got a good deal on them -- handguns, rifles and pistols. My S&W Mod 19 is a police turn-in with a lot of holster wear and a great action; it was fired very little. IIRC I paid a little over $200.

For those who only buy new, I traded in a perfectly good Glock G-30 because that model doesn't work for me. The G-21 is great, but the G-30 wasn't, so I sold it on consignment. Good gun and gently used, just didn't fit me. Someone should have gotten a great deal.
 
When a new gun only costs $50 more and comes with a lifetime warranty as opposed to no warranty, why would anyone buy used? I have bought guns both new and used. New guns I always knew could go back to the store or the manufacturer if there was a problem. The used guns not so much. I've bought many used guns that I got for a good price. I have bought new guns for relatively small amounts more than used ones. I have found new guns cheaper in another store than what some stores had them for used. Some of my new guns were guns that were not available for very long before I got one, thus there was no used available. If someone is relatively new to firearms and does not know how to check out a firearm and know whether or not they are paying a fair price, are better off buying new.....especially in today's market, where demand means anything is sell-able and the unscrupulous abound.

While you may have no reasons to buy new, there are many reasons others do. Funny, you never hear of folks saying they prefer a second hand spouse, just cause they're cheaper and already broken in. :scrutiny:
 
My collection is split at about 50/50. Some of the new ones are because I couldn't find used ones in the right shape at the right price. Or I just plain couldn't find one. I don't hesitate to buy new as long as the price is right.

Most of my used purchases were because the price was to good to pass up for a firearm I didn't need. I still check the used racks but I've been seeing them come through in worse condition it seems. I also tend to look for chamberings in odd calibers so I'm stuck buying used in these cases.

I don't hesitate to buy either way. No reason to limit yourself as long as you have the money to pay for it.

Depends on what I'm after and how good the deal is (new or used). If we're talking a used Glock for $500 and a new one for $550, that's pretty much a no brainer. But if the used one is $400 in near-new condition, that's also a no brainer.

Much of what I buy hasn't been produced in years. My latest acquisition is a 10 gauge hammer double, an L.C. Smith that was made in 1884. 10 ga hammer doubles haven't been made since the very beginning of the 19th century, so unless I wanted to spend thousands on a custom build, there is nothing resembling a "new" option.

Probably 2/3 of what I currently own was used. Lots of mil surps, lots of older S&W guns (pre-lock revolvers, 3rd gen autos).

Some guns have a lifetime warranty regardless of ownership.

While buying a used Glock gen 4 doesnt make much sense, buying a used Colt Python or a used S&W 5906 makes a lot of sense. Neither the Colt or the Smith are made anymore, one is a valuable collectors piece and the other is becoming so.

I'd buy a used S&W 5906 over a new M&P9 any day.

If you can find a used stainless GP-100 for $350 you better jump on it. To start off with good luck finding a used stainless GP-100. I have a hard time finding blued SA Rugers at the prices you are quoting much less double action stainless guns. Maybe you should fast forward your prices to 2013. I just turned down $600 for my 3 screw 44 mag that is blued. You can find that gun in stainless for $350, good luck.
 
Well I guess I am the exception to the rule. I always buy new, with the exception of my SKS. Why you ask? I find the newer designs more reliable, more user friendly and just better made than those of the past. Yes, there are some fine old rifles made, but fewer of them there is of us that buy them. Few and far between. A lot of so so older rifles, but I am not looking for a so so rifle that I will dump a ton of money into to customize it.

So I go with new.

I generally try to buy used. The way I see it, assuming I get a decent deal on a used gun I can try out something new and if I don't like it get 100% of my money back. A mistake on a new gun purchase will cost you about 20% of what you paid new, sometimes more.

It also depends on the value of the gun in question. A .22lr that is $200 new or $150 used, I would purchase new. Now an ar-10 that is $1500 new or $1000 used, I will take my chances used all day long.
 
I have been to 11 gun stores (some better than others) in the Northern Va area in the last 2 weeks and there is virtually NOTHING available. Just junky no name stuff. I would love to buy used.
