My LGS claims he cannot get ahold of an SR1911. So I'm forced to turn to online sources such as GB. But perusing the current auctions has left me puzzled. Are all factory SR1911's the same? I see one here going for over a grand, while this one here has no bidders as of right now. I realize the first one ends today and the second has a few days left but still, I've been watching both and the one over a grand was bid on days ago. What gives?

I'll tell you what puzzles me about ruger 1911 prices, why people go out and pay a premium to get a what was initially attractive because it was a budget/entry 1911.

As to different models the only variation I'm aware of is the newest commander sized guns. You might check ruger's website for info concerning other variants.

Call Ruger, I did after being told the same thing as you at a number of places. They asked for my zip code and gave me two places to check. They both had them, one for 749.00 and one for 619.00, I bought the one for 619.00 . Looks like I should have bought a few more. That was about 3 months ago.

After shipping, taxes, fees, etc, I wound up about $800-ish OTD. Around what I would pay for a Springfield Armory. Why?

I'll be honest. They are very rare in Kalifornistan. I like having something not everyone else does. Everybody and his dog have Springfields.

Also American made.
All the features I want & none I don't.
I'm a Ruger bottom feeder fanboi. (Not crazy about their revolvers)
Ruger customer service.
I knew I would get a quality pistol for the price.
Almost unanimous reviews that it is a big bang for the buck.

After about 500-ish rounds I'm not a bit sorry. It is an outstanding pistol.

Got mine for $600. I love it, but wouldn't pay $800+ for it. The two the OP posted are the same model, although there were some special edition items released with white grips, I believe. Ruger, intentionally or not, has kept demand high by having a limited supply available and now releasing the Commander length before the original orders are even filled.

As mentioned above, it's an all American product with quality customer service behind it, and that's hard to beat.

The Ruger SR1911 is a great pistol, but if you are paying more than ~$700 for it, you are paying too much.

$800-900 gets you a forged-frame S&W, SIG, or Springfield Armory 1911.

Step up to $950-$1050 and you can get a Colt, and Colt is putting out some pretty fantastic 1911s these days.

Actually, my dog prefers his Glock. He can't figure out the thumb safety on the 1911's. :)

Dingo has a bit of a problem with mag changes but has developed a suitable workaround. The ambi safety on the RIA Tactical is a big help to those without opposable thumbs...

He says Glocks make great chew toys... :D

Yeah, paying that much for an entry level 1911 is pretty stupid, especially since it wouldn't be affected by possible legislation. Whoever paid over $1000 did not do their research or any looking around.

Pure foolishness on their part.

I also won't pay $1400 for a Kel-Tec KSG. Paying over MSRP is silly no matter the product.

Noooo....

Not stupid (necessarily). What it means could be...

A. They have the money to spend on it. $1K is chump change to some people(Must be nice :().
B. It's what they want and they want it NOW. As we know the SR1911 is hard to find. They saw an opportunity to get one and maybe $$$ isn't a big deal to them.
C. Maybe the seller is local to them and they don't mind paying for the convenience.
D. Any number of the above or other things or maybe even shill bidding and the gun will be relisted.

Saying somebody is stupid for overpaying for a handgun is kind of like saying that any guy who buys a red 'vette or a big bore magnum handgun is "compensating" for something. ;)

In the above case(s)... why spend $1000 for $600 pistol when $1200 pistols are still selling for.......$1200?

Just a thought on irrational behavior ;)

Meh... not something you or I would do. But hasn't anything just GRABBED you in a way that you knew you were doing something silly but didn't care?

As for $1200 pistols still selling for $1200. Wouldn't know. The 1911 case at my LGS is bare as Old Mother Hubbard's cupboard. Actually, pretty much ALL the cases are...

Paying these high inflated prices is caused by the banning and restrictions of guns and ammo? This appears to be happening all over the USA. Panic buying of both handguns, repeating auto rifles and ammo.
When is this expected to return to normal? I remember last time there was a ammo shortage because everyone went out in a panic to buy ammo.

I see your point Fishslayer, and perhaps I shouldn't have said "stupid". Let me instead say, I think it is a stupid use of money regardless of your financial situation. Even if you have a lot of money to spend, and it doesn't matter to you, it is still a poor use IMO, when you over pay for a product. Your other points do make sense. There may be other factors that I don't know about. But, it is only my opinion, and I am a frugal person, so take it as just that, my opinion.

It doesn't mean that because that is the right answer for me, it is the right answer for anyone else.

I agree.

My LGS had one for $647 about three weeks ago...I'm not really into stainless otherwise I would have bought it. It's since sold...but I thought that was a good price considering what I see them go for online

hmmm...lots of people say its a $600 pistol but...Please show me where it is for sale for $600???
I agree thus far all gun shops are out of handguns and handgun ammo. Panic buying has spread across the nation.

The shop by me sells them for $629, buddy of mine bought one last week and I'm trying it out tonight at the range. I think it is a better value than the Remington and S&W. At the gun show they were priced around $800-$875. Toooo steep. Nice looking pistol, anxious to see how the trigger is, my last few Rugers have had disappointing triggers (LC9, SR22) but this is at a much higher price point so there's hope.

Um... haha, eh.... Having never heard mag-fed pistols described this way, I must admit to being a bit put off by the moniker "bottom feeders"... :barf: Then again, I guess it makes sense, if you're shoving the magazine into the butt of the pistol.

I am still on my LGS's waiting list for an SR1911. It's been about two years--or is it three? The distributors seem to take care of the large retailers first...when they send her one, I'm in business. Until than, I have other 1911s.
The only one I have seen locally was marked at $799.

a) It's not a $600 gun if you can't buy it for $600. If you found one for $650-ish a year ago, you did well. If you pay $700-750 for one today, I think you will be pretty happy. Even at $800, the overwhelming majority of people that I read seem to be crazy happy about theirs.
b) It is a pretty dang good 1911.
c) Some of the $1200 pistols I've seen (and one or two I've owned)...I'd rather have an SR1911. Or at least I wouldn't mind trying one...

I actually paid (IIRC) $635 for the gun in December last year. I actually DROSd it on December 14. Could have been $610 if I'd paid by check. What brought it to $800-ish was shipping, taxes & fees. We overpay for everything in this state. :cuss:

Some places charge more because they can. Demand > Supply. I'd been trying to get my hands on one since they came out.

FWIW I had no interest in any Kimbers nor South American stuff.
