New guy with .22 question

Hi, I have been lurking this forum for a while now and I finally decided to join. I have been into guns my whole life about as have a lot of my family members. I have been on some other forums and stuff mostly car forums this is only my second firearms forum. Seems like a good forum where you can get a lot of good information from. I am in the market for a .22 caliber rifle I have a buddy who owns a S&W M&P 15-22 I shot that and really liked it. I really would like to get my hands on a HK MP5 .22 I did some research on them from what I read they seem to be pretty good. Hoping maybe some of you guys on here had some advise on the subject any help would be appreciated. Its a toss up on the HK MP5 or any AR style .22 that is reliable. I was in a store earlier this morning the guy who worked there told me the Colt AR15 .22 they had he said was a piece of junk and he said "I wouldn't take that if it was free" it was a used one. The previous owner did really modify the hell out of it with a ACOG scope flash light and laser quad rails. wondering what you guys thought
 
The GSG5 (MP5 .22 clone) is a good .22 rifle, but it is not made by HK. The best representation of an AR that you can get right now is an M&P 15-22. They are fantastic guns and, while expensive, are worth what they are going for. I would get an M&P well before I got the GSG5, it is just a better gun.

And welcome to the forum! Keep asking questions, we're here to answer them. If you can do that and also give us your input where we need it then you'll fit right in!

thanks for the info and thanks for the welcome, I did look at a GSG5 the place I went to today had one in stock the guy who worked there said not to waste my money on that one either, he said to get a ruger 22 or the M&P 15-22. They were all out of the M&P none in stock no where local has them either I looked I did however find a HK 416 .22 but from what I read its made by umarex the guy wanted like $800 for it. It looked really nice but sure still checking out the reviews on it.

That's about how I feel on them. The GSG5 is a good rifle (the one that I have shot), but there are many great .22 rifles. The Ruger 10/22 is a classic gun that has served shooters for decades and the M&P 15-22 is a top notch gun. The Umarex 416 is fairly new I believe, and I have no experience with one so I can't offer any insight into it (but I could never see paying $800 for one unless it was gold plated).

yeah I thought that the $800 price tag was a little over priced for a .22 when the M&P 15-22 is way cheaper

I can't speak to the HK clone, but I have gotten much use - and enjoyment - out of my S&W M&P 15-22. It feeds and cycles most any .22, which is a lot to say about the quality of mass-produced .22s.

I've used it in classes and "outreach" programs at my local gun club with members of the press, business leaders, and plain friends to introduce newbies to guns. Once they've gotten the basics with a single shot .22 or a Ruger MKI, it's a "cool gun" to shoot. They recognize it looks like a modern battle rifle, but is quite light and without the kick.

And when they're done, they smile. That 15-22 is a great "outreach gun", and beyond the personal enjoyment I get out of it, I've had literally over 100 non-gunners, fence-sitters, and even anti-gunners warm up to it and want to shoot more when their chance to shoot it was done.

That alone makes the S&W 15-22 stand out in my book as one of the best advancements in modern rifle production in my lifetime. Besides the fact I enjoy it so damn much, and can do so because .22 is a lot less expensive than centerfire .223 ammo.
 
I love my M&P 15-22, one of the best just fun guns I have.Wish I could find ammo......

I shot my friends 15-22 and it was a lot of fun, and a rifle I am really interested in. The HK MP5 .22 just has a cool factor from its looks that draws me to it. The 15-22 is something I really like just cause it had the quad rail that can be used for all kinds of accessories and mount a nice optic for a day of fun at the range.
 
Hi tG, I recently purchased the Umarex H&K MP5SD 22lr and am really enjoying it. It's my first rifle and I am learning as much as I can, as fast as I can with it. Its spit out over 500 Remington bulk pack rounds with no issues. As far as I can tell its as accurate as I can shoot. Possibly someone who can really shoot and knows guns would be able to offer a more knowledgeable opinion of it as a weapon, but I like it a lot! No regrets buying it although it was a bit pricy but nothing near $800, closer to 580. Still a bit expensive but I compared it to a GSG for $500 and it felt much more solid… plus places with lower prices didn't have it in stock. Since its my favorite good guy movie gun I made up my mind and put the money down on the H&K MP5SD.
 
Welcome aboard, You could always get a 10/22 and put it in a archangel or similar after market stock. One of the great things about the Ruger is the limitless after market goodies for them.
 
Have you checked out the Mossberg Tactical 22? No association with gander mountain it was just the first google link to come up to give you a quick overview.

AR style 22 that I have heard mostly good things about, granted not as many good things as the S&W 15-22, but at a much lower price point of $299 might be worth checking out.

Thanks for the help I feel more confident now about picking the right rifle. It's good to know the mp5 .22 is pretty reliable and solid feeling.

I've heard a lot of good things about the 10/22 everyone I talk to about that rifle only has good things to say about it. I may look into that and possibly changing the stock.

Yeah I've seen that one I like it but I just haven't been able to find it any where. I really picked a great time to add a new gun to the collection, with all the political matters going on and everyone buying everything in sight.

The issue you have to consider is how much of the costs of the rifle are put into making it look like something it is not (i.e. an AR type) which has no functional value, versus the funds remaining to make it in to an excellent firearm?
The answer is that, unless you pay waaaay more than a quality .22LR, you're getting a lesser gun. So you need to decide if you want the look of a quality gun, or a quality gun.
I'd recommend the 10/22. You can later make it look like whatever you want but you'll still have an excellent firearm that you can keep forever.

There's a reason Ruger sells so many 10/22s and Marlin sells so many Model 60s and 795s, and that is that they offer the most value for the price. Cosmetic stuff on a .22 semi-auto doesn't increase accuracy, reliability, or ergonomics several hundred dollars' worth.
 
I can attest to the umarex MP5 offering . I have 2 friends that have them & to the best of my knowledge NO jams whatsoever in mag dump after mag dump with them . As for the M&P 15-22 ; I own one & its my favorite semi auto . Cant go wrong with either one of them . Shop around , dont over pay to these gougers .
 
What! No love for the Sig Sauer 522? It's a great looking rifle.

I have one and it is a hoot to shoot. The gun has never given myself or my son any problems. It just shoots everything we feed it and pretty accurately I might add. I think I paid just at $400 for it two years ago. I'm sure they are more than that now. Only issue I've had in that time is one of the original plastic mags broke, so I bought 3 replacements. :D

Not everyone has such a high opinion of them. They're fine rifles but they're overpriced compared to better rifles. They are great if what you want is a rifle to add stuff on to make it something else or to make it just look like something else. I guess bling is not my thing.
