Hello,

This is a modified Euroarms cal44 :

- shortened barrel
- new higher front sight
- birdhead grip
- modified hammer
- drilled top strap for weaver rail and Leupold 2x20


Shooting cal45 Colt 255grs bullet with full BP load (over 30grs) at 25m with rest (3 bullets are within the same hole):

The goal is 50m , 100m .......? We'll see!!!!!!!!!!!

Great shooting. I don't think I've ever seen a scope mounted on a BP gun before. The Rogers & Spencer is a superb BP revolver. How much was the barrel shortened? That is a very powerful load you're using. Have you Chronographed it? I'd be interested in seeing what sort of velocity you're getting. Thats a much heavier bullet than most use for that gun.
 
Interesting. Better a scope than a shorter EOTech that will be fouled after a few shots.

I wrecked the dovetail at the normal place so I sawed 1.5cm off the barrel and started again and succeed (hopefully otherwise this story could end with a snubnose !!)

I use very heavy load because the bullets need sufficent spin and the barrel is only 1:26" (and not 1:16" as usual for 45colt 255grs bullets).

The accuracy of heavy bullets is inferior until now and the scope is very useful..........

I sight-in loads with a rest (sandbag under my hands) at 35 yards. I use a hand-cast 255 grain semi-wadcutter type bullet in .45 and found that lighter bullets are more accurate also. However, the 255 gr. bullet has been a proven deer killer for me in my Ruger Old Army so I will continue to use it. I am currently testing various weights of powder to get the most accurate load and, so far, lighter loads are showing better accuracy.
 
more tests at 25m with rest.

6 x Balls cal.454 are shot with 20grs BP and 20 grs cornmeal

6 x 45colt bullets are shot with full load of BP, no cornmeal.


Balls are clustering at point of aim. Bullets shoot much higher hence the blue aimpoint at the bottom of the paper.

I am not sure that bullets are less accurate but they are more demanding because recoil is heavier and the shooter has to do his part.

Looks like fun. You should slug your barrel and mic your cylinder.Most cap n ball revolvers have way under sized chambers and often one or more that are not the same as the other chambers.Its not a hard job to ream them out if they need it and could improve your groups even more.Sometimes helps to lengthen your forcing cone a bit too especially when using those .45 colt bullets.It surprizes me that some of these guns shoot as good as they do when a lot of them have bullets that are less than the barrel groove diamiter after they are loaded in the cylinder.I have a walker that has the cylinder reamed half way down so that the balls match the groove in the barrel.I cant remember what they mic at but i know a 457 ball will fall right in the cylinder.I will probobly have a mold made for it but .490 balls work good in it too.Also this thing will easy hold 70 grains of powder in the chambers. It would also be interesting to take a rem 58 and replace the barrel with a faster twist and scope it like your R&S and see what it does.
 
mykeal,i have checked my powder measure and its on.I ment the chambers will hold 70 gr, not with a ball in it too.I only use 50 gr at most when im shooting it.Usually 45gr of 3f 777 and wad plus ball is what i shoot in it.

Apparently you don't seem to have a problem with the bullets in the cylinder shifting forward under recoil. How did you manage that, or does the heavier weight of the bullets take care of that? Also how many foot pounds of energy is sufficient for the taking of game with this set up?
 
The 2 bolts that hold the rail to the frame topstrap were bent, due to recoil ; hence I threaded larger holes and installed bigger bolts.


New test at 100 meters distance, with rest :

1.7g BP and Lee 45colt 255grs bullet.
30 bullets were shot and all but one punched the paper.

The impact is about 13inch lower at 100m compared to 50m ; and there is little variation from 25m to 50 m.
