Ruger sent me their LC380 for review. After a not so positive range session they sent a second pistol with admirable results. Still though the magazines won't hold more than a few Black Hills .380 rounds.

Thanks, stop by there from time to time, I'm usually working on something. The SR9c is my carry piece right now.

From the review:

Ruger announced this as a .380 chambered LC9.

So, I have a question: if the only change to bring the caliber from 9x19mm to .380ACP is the magazine spacer, would slapping in a LC9 magazine "make this an LC9"? I'm guessing not, so what else is in place to prevent the inadvertent chambering of a 9mm Luger cartridge? I've not seen the gun in person yet, so I's assume a shorter chamber, right?

Thanks for an excellent review. I bet this 380 will allow female shooters to easy rack the slide compared to "pocket" 380 pistols.

Correct, a shorter chamber. The longer 9mm(9x19mm) will not fully seat in a .380 ACP(9x17mm) chamber.

Correct. Physics would allow a 9x19 to go into battery on a .380 chamber.

"Correct. Physics would NOT allow a 9x19 to go into battery on a .380 chamber."

I'm sure you meant this but I thought for those that don't know it should be corrected.

They are using lighter recoil springs for the .380 cartridge vs the 9mm, so yes slide manipulation requires less force. And on top of that the felt recoil of the .380 was considerable less as well as less muzzle blast.

Ah, thank you, missed a very important word there. Correcting my post for safety purposes.

Since the LC380 is basically an LC9, I assume that it has the same long trigger pull?

I also wonder if I can simply change out the barrel/mag and convert my LC9 to fire the more commonly found (these days anyway) .380 ammo?

I have installed the Galloway extra power recoil spring, so I would probably have to go back to the stock recoil spring...

Yes it does have the same trigger unit, but this 380 felt smoother than my LC9.

I can't speak on behalf of the factory, but I can't see why it wouldn't work with replacing the barrel, magazine and springs. The .380 has lighter springs than the 9mm.

Unless... Some manufacturers that produce the "same" pistol in several calibers (such as 9mm, 40S&W, 357SIG) there is some slide weight differences between them. For instance, some steel may be milled out of a 40 S&W slide to make it lighter to properly function with the less recoil of a 9mm. In this case the LC380 and LC9 may be incompatible. Again, I can't speak for the factory.
