my girlfriend is into the whole pirate thing and I'd like to get her a flintlock pistol. what would you recommend as a starter kit for me?

What's the expected actual use? Costume? One-off range trip? Repeated range trips? You can go from non-firing replicas for costume use to inexpensive Middlesex guns for light load range trips or get something nicer for more $$.

Mostly costume, however it will be to the range repeatedly. I'm looking to stay under $400

Pedersoli Kentucky as from Dixie as there will be nothing that needs fixing to make it work.

Get a decent set of Flints for it and it will just flat work. I believe the were offered in .45 or .50 caliber and are rifled

That's one under the Enfield.

You can get the same thing in a kit for less: http://www.dixiegunworks.com/product_info.php?cPath=22_162_195&products_id=967

It will need some filing and sanding of the wood and filing and polishing of the brass but it does not take too long to finish. I bought the percussion version. It took me about 4 evenings and a part of a saturday to finish but it looks and shoots great. Be sure you have a source for black powder before you order it though......

Dixie Gun Works used to sell a "Tower Flintlock Pistol" in .69 calibre that looked very piratey. They haven't carried them for a few years, but they show up on the gun auctions from time to time in the $150-$250 range.

Kit's are fine. I know the tower flintlock, dad has one that won't spark to save it's life.

Yeah, the old Dixie catalog mentioned the soft frizzen problem with them. They also sold a case hardening compound to reharden them, so they'd spark reliably. I think the original catalog price was about $39.95, so what can you expect!
