:fire: I just bought a Smith & Wesson Shield 9mm, and I can't even carry the thing since I can't find any hollow points locally or online (besides gunbroker for $2+ a round) I know I'm preaching to the choir, and yes I stood in line behind 70 people today at Gander Mtn. only to see a few boxes of FMJ 9mm gone in a nano second. :cuss: Sorry, had to vent. Anyone know of any sites where you can pre-order anything?

Yes, it's silly. HOWEVER, it might be worth it to buy one load of premium JHP at a ridiculous price to have it for carry, if that's what you plan on using it for. (It would be even better if you could buy a couple of hundred of them to test first.)

We argue a lot over whether JHP is necessary. I think some people overestimate the real-world difference between JHP and FMJ, but it's still an advantage nonetheless.

Check gunbot.net every couple hours throughout the day, they seem to keep on top of who's got what for available inventory,
I see some 147gr Golden-Sabers on there right now

Oh there is limit of one or two boxes of .45 or 9x19 for range use only. As I said not long ago things will be "improving" soon.

If you don't have another option, carry it with ball or whatever you've got. You should already know your target and what's behind it as a matter of course. HPs are a relatively new invention and bullets killed a whole lot of people over the years before they came along...

I'll check tonight - I might have a spare box of Gold Dot Short Barrel at home, if you are interested.

I have seen 9mm HP ammo at several LGS this week. Critical Defense was abundant at Barrow Automotive in Butler GA yesterday for $22 but they had no FMJ in 9mm.

Those worthless old solid balls and Minie Balls killed a large portion of the 620,000 dead in the War Between The States. The great herds of American Bison were decimated with big, slow rainbow trajectory solid lead pellets of various design.

That's good enough for me to dispel any myths of my cast boolits being a poor self defense choice.

Legal issues ... show me the court documents.

That must have been a sight to see - hunters taking down buffalo with 3" 9mm pistols...or was that Gettysburg that you were referring to? :neener:

My intention isn't to rub it in, but I have zero problems finding .357 and .44 magnum. I'm gonna hold on too them though - never know when one day it'll all dry up.

I just came from Bass Pro in Leeds, AL and they had 0 handgun ammunition. FMJ or HP. Was encouraging to see rifle and shotgun ammo on the shelves though. Forget about reloading supplies.

Online will probably be your best bet. Most chain and brand stores like Cabelas doesn't even list most ammo anymore. I am guessing if TX is like AL, when you get away from the large cities into mining/oil towns you will find 1 or 2 large firearm stores and not many little ones. Check there, those places tend to get the ammo fresh off the presses.

Never heard of gunbot in my life. I just checked it out.
That is frickin' cool man with the real-time inventory thing.
THANK YOU. I added it to my favorites.

I got some Golden Sabers at my LGS not too long ago. Half a shelf of 'em in stock and they were on sale. They also had frangible rounds, but I wasn't touching those. $1/ round of Golden Sabers isn't horribly awful given the days we're living, but the $2+/ round for the frangibles was just too much for a bullet I hope I never have to fire.

Just tried it, it is cool and usefull. I am a reloader and don't pay attention to commercial ammo prices normally. You guys must be freeking out on those prices (ouch). No wonder Wally World's shelves get cleaned out as soon as it comes in.

I use to joke that I got into reloading to save money, but it never happened because I kept reloading more and more till I spent more on reloading than if I purchased ammo. I guess that isn't true anymore even with the higher cost of components.

Good luck, I hope this changes back to normal soon.

I just hope you gents here HAVE LEARNED TO GET YOUR GUNS AND AMMO BEFORE some idiot in Congress tries to ban them.

Now I doubt the ban will pass this time but hey, Dollar Bill Cllinton and Janet 'baby killer' Reno got it passes many years ago.

I learned from that one (we had a run on ammo and guns, especially ARs and AKs.. sound familiar?) and I have my setup.

So guys, learn from this one and after the hysteria dies down, and so does the prices, you get your setup and don't sell it. I didn't sell my 'Reno special' AK (it has no bayonet lug) when I bought it many years ago for $300 and I don't plan on selling it now.

Thanks for the help guys, gunbot has given me some hope after seeing some rounds out there. I have found plenty of 147 and 115 grain jhp out there using gunbot, and now I just need to find some 124 jhp. I know I shouldn't be picky now, but I'm set on non +p 124 grain jhp.

Get out of the city and go to smaller town shops Ive had the best luck with those.
Know when your wally world receives their ammo shipments, same with acadamey, etc. Sign up for Midway and Brownells "contact me when in stock" options and be ready to pounce. The high volume Box stores are receiving it you just have to be there at the right time. You can find ammo its just not going to magically fall in your lap and will require a little effort.

I buy my JHP from SG Ammo (often best prices online) - http://www.sgammo.com/catalog/pistol-ammunition

They are closed 3/15 - 3/24 and will resume operation on 3/25. They are currently out of stock on 9mm JHP ammunition but have plenty of other calibers. Check back on 3/25 and they may have restocked their inventory.

For 9mm, I usually recommend Remington Golden Saber 124 gr +P JHP but due to current situation, any JHP may be better than FMJ.

Get some reloading equipment and some lead. I make and load my own for $2.10 a box or $63.00 for 1500 rounds and they are more accurate than store bought. Also wears your barrel less.

Gunbot was fantastic when it first started out. I got some insane deals on there. Now, it is the first result when you google ".223 ammunition in stock" and it is general knowledge on many firearms forums.

Everyone and there brother watches it like a hawk... you will see good priced ammo show up, and 3 minutes later it is bought out, out of stock again

So make sure you activate the beep alert and keep your ears open. Good luck!

One thing I did was invest in a 10mm. When 9mm is going for 80 cents a round, 45 cents for a hot 10mm load doesn't look so bad! When the ammo shortage goes back to normal I'll be back to shooting a lot more 9mm but until then, I'm enjoying my 10.
