So, about this new NY ammo law...

I understand that I will soon have to pass a background check in order to buy ammo.
Sometimes NICS checks are delayed by a few days before being approved.
Although this has never happened to me, apparently NICS checks are often put on delay for permanent residents.
Does this mean that I theoretically stand the chance of having to wait three days to pick up, say, a box of 50 .22lr?

Also, I have read that large volume sales may trigger an alert with the police?
What about cumulative purchases?
Will they be keeping a tally of how much ammo people purchase?
What action will the police take if the system alerts them of a large ammo purchase?
Will there be any differentiation between calibers?
500 rounds of .22 is a lot different to 500 rounds of a fullbore centerfire rifle round.

Will we soon see maximum ammo allowances?
 
This will get really ugly, NJ is trying to do the same thing. I am currently on day 3 of waiting for a shotgun I already paid for to be handed over pending the return of my NICS check. If this happens with ammo I can't imagine how flooded the system will be with check requests. And do we have to pay $15 for a check every time??

I don't think it does.
It may be possible that there will be a law against bringing ammo into the state, but I haven't seen anything about it.

These laws aren't really designed to actually do anything except harass gun owners though.
If your only alternative to jumping through the hoops is to travel out of state, that's still very inconvenient, so either way they meet their goal of harassment.

Excellent point, I'll add that to the list of questions:

Will there be a charge for the check?

It will probably be up to the gun store owners whether or not to charge, and it will only take one of them doing it for free to force all of them to do the same, so hopefully they will do the right thing...
 
at some point it really will just be simpler to become a criminal.
 
Well I guess that our NY lawmakers simply consider gun owners to be criminals who don't break the law.
What do we therefore need?
More laws!
 
There are ammo shortages everywhere so please stop posting stuff like this. There is no NYS just NYC and Suffolk Co. That state is lost cause.

There is no registration here for (non 'assault weapon') long guns.
I'm glad that it has stayed that way, at least for now...

I'm not sure I follow.
Are you saying that members from NY shouldn't try to keep abreast of the new laws affecting us?
 
I really respect and even appreciate THR's policy against encouragement of illegal conduct. If this type of thing keeps happening and becomes more widespread, though, that policy will be MIGHTY hard to abide by at times...

Of course, if the madness goes far enough, anything on-topic for discussion at THR will be discussion of illegal conduct.

I seriously doubt it will be a NICS check, so it will be some Rube Goldburg thing the individual states put together, with no to minimal funding, of course.

This. I contemplated moving back to my "home state" of NY before SAFE was passed. I decided not to considering crossing the border would instantly make me a felon. Gun control laws only prevent law abiding gun owners anyway.
 
80% of the 62 county legislatures in New York State have now passed resolutions OPPOSING the NY SAFE Act. A lot of dedicated people in NYS are working hard at all levels to defeat that law.
There have been Pro Second Amendment Rallies going on all over the state. since February. As a matter of fact, there a people working right now on a Rally in Gouverneur, St. Lawrence County that will be held on April 13.That involves contacting media in three counties, arranging for guest speakers, people to man tables where folks can become members of SCOPE, The NRA, The New York State Rifle and Pistol association AND even get voter registation forms. Writing off the entire State of New York is premature and disrespectful to good people striving to preserve our Second Amendment rights.
Maybe the gentleman who was so dismissive of New York would like come up to the rally in Gouverneur and teach us how to preserve our rights.

How is a FOID-type system forward thinking?
I for one do not want to have to have a license to own a gun, too much like the country I left (UK).
It's bad enough trying to get a pistol license here, let alone a license to own any type of gun.

There is VERY strong opposition to the NY SAFE act in upstate New York. Will we succeed in overturning it? I don`t have the ability to predict the future, but I`m going to fight like hell to repeal it. And I`m not alone in this fight.
You might want to look into contacting the New york State Rifle and Pistol Association at http:/www.nysrpa.org and /or SCOPE Shooters Committee On Political Education.

Unfortunatley, it is pretty proven that NYC sets the pace for political results in NYS. Best of luck though. I know it's not really "THR" but non-compliance with state law is about the only way to uphold your Constitutional Rights.

It kind of goes back to the old Ethics Class 101 question... When is it okay to break an unjust law?

Good stuff. I'll do some research and see what I can do to help.
May inly be letter writing, but better than nothing.
 
A tad off thread here..... The big LGS aren't wanting to do NICS gun checks for prospective buyers now either, with the state mandating background checks for everyone. The LGS are stating, "If they think getting a BGC done for $10, they better think again, we won't do it for $10, it'll cost them closer to $50 for our time." Who knows where this will end !
 
Seems like the NY legislature is now trying to remove all or most of the funding from the SAFE act in the next budget. So I have a hard time seeing how these checks will even be implemented. Not that it really matters. Buy guns out-of-state, buy ammo out-of-state, shoot out-of-state (NY doesn't seem to have many good shooting ranges anyway). Problems solved. Laws don't apply.

I know that discussing illegal acts here is frowned upon but at this point you might as well just call it activism. Civil disobedience.
 
I'm not sure that what you're discussing is illegal, depends what the laws concerning bringing ammo in from another state are.
I don't like the sound of that $50 thing.
If gun stores started charging that much for the background check, it wouldn't make the lawmakers reconsider, it would make them rub their hands in glee. They don't want us to buy ammo.
I think that a lot of stores will just either stop selling ammo, or try to get away with charging a ridiculous fee for the check.
Then, when nobody can afford to get ammo for their guns, the stores will go out of business.

Guns stores are something I'm concerned about at the moment, especially with the threat of UBC's looming.
If we get UBC's or have to have a BC for ammo, the gun stores get something new to charge us for.
Obviously, any gun store owner with a brain will realize that it would be the beginning of the end, but short sighted FFL's will be delighted at the opportunity to get more money.
We need the support of FFL's to win this, but they stand to make more money (in the short term) from these laws.
 
The easiest way to beat this problem I can think of is just to move to Texas!
