I've only shot the CZ-82 and the actual Makarov. Between those two I'd give a slight edge to the CZ-82, but the Makarov ain't a bad gun either. The CZ just takes the lead by virtue of holding more rounds and having a the more modern mag release.

My 1987 CZ82 is unquestionably the best $200 I ever spent on a pistol. I can't speak for the Mak's,but I've heard there good also, but man I love that little CZ.

I'd probably sell or trade the ammo for something more immediately useful to me (and chose such above) but if I found a CZ82 at a good price I could go that route instead.

9x18mm

The CZ82 has easily been the best 'bang for the buck' firearm I have found over the last year.

Just for context in ammo prices, I was happy to pay $365.65 last month for 1500 rounds of Russian steel case Berdan primed FMJ 9x18MM Makarov cartridges delivered to my front door. That 24.4 cents per round OTD price is the best I have found since last summer, and it is very difficult to find anything less than $0.40 per round today.

Makarov for a collector but CZ82 for a shooter. The maks are nicer, indestructible, and cost twice as much. The CZ82 is ambidextrous, modern, double stack, half the cost, but the flaking paint looks bad. You can swap the mak barrel to shoot 380 acp and use the same mags, spring, slide etc so you have more possibilities of finding ammo for it if things get tough(er).

You owe it to yourself to try the Makarov or the CZ82. My choice was CZ. Very good trigger, inexpensive, accurate with cheap Russian ammo. Being a bit heavier than others of this caliber makes it fun to shoot. CZUSA in Kansas City is there for you should you need work done on it.

The Makarov might make a better choice (size and shape) if you carry.

I have a CZ82 and a Russian Commercial Mak. I'd say the CZ is a hair better for a shooter but I'd be hard pressed to not suggest the oriiginal Mak if a guy was only gonna have one 9X18. If you're anywhere near Wichita you bring ammo I'll bring the guns and we'll shoot em a bit and help you decide.

Buy yourself a CZ-82 and count your blessings. For just over $300 you'll have a dang nice pistol and a bunch of ammo for it.

Original Makarov. Simple, accurate, easier to carry than the CZ-82. Much fewer parts to break, and Makarovs rarely break anything anyway.

The guns that are chambered in 9x18 are generally so cheap that you might as well buy one. The PA63 is under $200, the Polish P64 is usually under $200, the Mak clones are usually $350 or lower.

I think you'll be quite happy with either a Makarov or Cz-82. They are great range pistols as well as defensive arms.

I love my P64 as well as they are accurate and well-made, but I don't exactly enjoy shooting it much.

I've got them all.

I rate them, Makarov 1st.
CZ 83 then the used CZ82.

PA63 and P64 down a bit both in third place.

Pretty much all the surplus pistol I came across have been very good. But I would recommend a makarov. The few I have are very accurate. I'd say handle them, you might like one more then the other

Hi,
So a friend calls me the other night and says he has a bunch of "9mm" ammo for sale, he just wants to get rid of it for the first hundred dollar bill that came along,
So I hustled over there and lo and behold, he had 1700 rounds of 9x18
So I put a hundred dollar bill in his hand and walked away with all of it,
Problem.....
I have no gun chambered in 9x18 makarov. I'm just addicted to ammo.
So now I'm sitting on enough ammo to make me consider buying one.
What would you do?
Trade or sell the ammo, or buy a gun?
and if you were to by a gun, which one specifically, that is chambered for 9x18?
The original - the Pistolet Makarova - Soviet, East German, Bulgarian, or ChiCom - the true "Makarov".

CZ 83 then the used CZ82.

Wow, I am jealous.

I would have to say the best gun to shoot 9mm Mak is the gun that was designed with the ammo and that would be the Makarov. The CZ 82 is a good gun too but you won't like the recoil of the PA63. The CZ 83 is actually a 380 and some of the Makarovs are 380s as well.

The 82 is a lot of gun for $250, and if you don't mind a refinish you can turn them into something awfully pretty, too. The Polish P64s were a screaming deal when they were $150 a year ago and carry like a dream, but now that prices have gone up unless you really want a super small single stack, the 82 is the way to go. My FEG is one of the weirdo versions in 9x17 and it shoots wonderfully, but many people can't get over the grip frame and the recoil/flip in 9x18 due to the alloy frame.

I own both a P-64 and CZ-82. I have never owned or shot a Makarov or any other 9x18 pistols. That said, if someone offered me 1700 rounds of 9x18 for $100 I would be all over that like flies on a poop.

Buy anything chambered in 9x18 and you'll be good to go.

Cz 82

I like the CZ pistols. The CZ 82 is a bargain with good everything, sights, trigger and shooting characteristics.

My only real criticism is the lack of a hammer dropping safety.
