I have done this a few times over the years, and run into all kinds of folks. The nice ones and the ones who don't talk at all, "just want to get done and leave.
What do you guys look for when meeting a stranger for a swap, of a pistol?
I have a fellow who wants to meet up tomorrow, probablly right off the highway, and I never spoke to him, "till tomorrow" other than emails and texting. Says his gun is in new condition and only a few months old. Trading a M&P compact, for a shield 40. Mine has 50 rounds "the 40", and I find I would rather carry the compact and have the extra rounds.
The guns are about the same size other than the Mag capacity, I just have several small guns sitting around, and don't need, another 7 round pistol sitting around. I figure I will feel less like carrying a spare couple of mags with me.
Other than a quich function test, there isn't much You can check other than obvious ware, he has the paperwork, and so do I.

By paperwork I mean manuals warantee cards, no bill of sale or anything with ID. Just a Fl resident with a license.

The overall physical condition (outside and inside) can tell you a lot about how it has been taken care of or not. Then a function check making sure mags work, safety works, trigger reset, and ect.

Why do I think this is a bad idea. Meet at the side of the road??? Total stranger never meet with or talked to??

How do you know the M&P wasn't stolen? Is he going to bring his bill of sale when he purchased it?? How do you know it is legal for him to even own a firearm?? 5 DUI's and a felony conviction on his record??? A order of protection against him to protect his wife and children??

Meet him at a gun store so if you think there might be something fishy you could always have the store do the 4473's and background checks.

Most people meet in the parking lot of a public location. A restaurant, grocery store, sporting goods store, Walmart, whatever.

He won't know the M&P wasn't stolen. There is a slight risk there. Asking for some kind of proof of purchase or receipt from them is a not uncommon request. A lot of times they bought it from a retailer and have the receipt.

How does he know the guy is legally able to possess a firearm? Well, he doesn't have to know that, legally, but when he says "Just a Fl resident with a license." I am assuming he means a carry/weapon license, which is a very very good indication that the buyer is legally able to possess a handgun.

Private face to face transactions of firearms happen all the time. They really do.

Done, everything smooth, even got the reciept with price etc. Guy was a great gun owner. His weapon was 1 month old and he didn't want a 9mm, he wanted a 40, so it was a perfect deal, no nonsense, both had ccw permits, fl drivers license, etc.

We meet at Bass Pro's indoor range so he (or I) can try before buying.

When selling, I offer to meet at a range so they can fire the gun if they want. However, I require them to commit to buying before they fire it provided there are no functional issues. "Doesn't shoot good" or "I can't hit anything with it" aren't functional issues in my book, more like user error. I make this requirement so I don't have people taking a trip to the range with my guns.

Anyway, I've bought and sold a lot of guns FTF, and I always meet people in the parking lot of a major retailer, such as Bass Pro, Academy, Sam's Club, etc. I pick locations at the intersection of a couple of major highways to make it easy on everyone. Haven't had an issue with a FTF sale yet.
