I own a STI Trojan with Dawson upgrades. nothing at all wrong with this It hits where I aim. My favorite gunsmith told me he had a Sig in, smoothest 1911 he's handled and he's probably around 70.

I would like another tack driver at the range 8 in the mag. under $1500. Your top 3 selection, or.....

Rank according to what? Accuracy, reliability, value for the money? What are you going to use it for?

For years, I was anti Colt because I thought they were living off their name alone, and that they had a union work force that could care less about the product. In the last five years, I have done a complete 180, and now have two newly made Colts that are superb 1911's.
 
Colt is definitely turning out some decent guns these days and have been doing it for quite a few years now. Nice overall fit and finish, great slide to frame and barrel to slide fitting, and decent triggers out of the box show that Colt is putting quality and value back into their guns.
 
Rank according to what? Accuracy, reliability, value for the money? What are you going to use it for?

BTW I am a Colt Guy 3-revolvers and an AR. But I know their 1911s are good but are they that good.

Not too far off how I would have ranked them...as a gun I'd carry for defensive use or competition

I would move the SA RO down below the S&W (hoping you meant Performance Center), and moved the R1 to the bottom. So:

Dan Wesson
S&W Performance Center
Springfield Armory RO
Colt (but I think the Rail Gun might be over your limit)
SIG
Remington R1

I had a chance to try out an STI Trojan for a week at Gunsite and was pretty impressed. What do the Dawson upgrades entail?

I would rank the Trojan just under a Dan Wesson. Each could use a little work before I'd carry it, but they are both outstanding values in the mid-priced range
 
^^^ Echo but with a 3rd place tie with the SA RO or better and a Colt XSE or better. I'd add in an STI model like the Rangemaster with its bull barrel just for kicks though it blows the budget by $55.
 
Here's my ranking:

1) Dan Wesson. But good luck finding one. I don't think they have resumed production since their factory fire.

2)Any Colt. Colt is making some fantastic pistols these days. The last few Colts I've handled have been incredibly well-fitted and great shooters. Fewer MIM parts than most other mass-produced options. Also, everything else is just a clone.

3)Springfield Armory RO or better Great pistols for the money. Just wish they were made in the US. I guess if you get one with an "NM" serial prefix, they have parts and final fitting here.

4)Any Sig. Nice pistols, but not a fan of the slide profile or look of the external extractor.

5)Smith & Wesson New E model Precision Shop My brother has had nothing but trouble with his SW1911 (mostly failures to return to battery). After 2 trips to S&W and several parts replaced, it still is not 100%, so my opinion is tainted. Also hate the look of the silly fish scale serrations.

6)Remington R1 Enhanced Nothing against the R1. I just don't have any experience with them. Pretty sure frames are cast, unlike any of the other pistols listed above.

Dan Wessons usually rank high and they are good guns, but I recently got a V-Bob that had several issues. Out of spec extractor channel, improperly sized and shaped slide stop (inside the frame), and zero tension on the extractor. The fit and finish on the rest of the gun is fantastic. I am assuming the slide stop and extractor were done at one of the final stations by a guy or gal with a Monday morning hangover, or perhaps headed out the door on a Friday evening. No excuse for that kind of work. I suppose we all know production guns can be a crap shoot if they slip by quality control.
 
What do the Dawson upgrades entail?

magazine flair, different spring and guide, trigger work including leaf spring , fiber optic front sight. bushing is very tight. The trigger is too light, I double tap frequently not trying.

That is a technique issue...although you can fudge by tuning the leaf spring.

You are likely not following through with your trigger press, releasing the trigger too early and getting trigger bounce...
or
...you don't have the trigger discipline to not jerk through the trigger

Try taking up the slack in the trigger, then apply pressure and let off the trigger, increasing the amount of pressure each time. You should be able to get 4 bounces off the trigger. If you can't, you're applying too much pressure with the early presses

I see Dan Wessons at the local shops all the time. The 1911s seem to be in good supply here in the Midwest.
Regarding the R1, I sold my Colt Gold Cup Trophy and got a new Remington with a f/o front sight. How it was built, no idea, but it's tighter than the Colt (which is normally loose even when factory accurized), and it shoots just as well at least.

Try taking up the slack in the trigger, then apply pressure and let off the trigger

Rank your favorite to least.

There is no travel it shoots with a light squeeze.

Sig does make their traditional models, which is basically a normal slide profile. I too am of the opinion that they are better looking. It also helps them fit more holsters.
