I have $250 saved up for this purchase.
Samco has both the K31 for $269 and the 24/47 for $229.
Both in excellent shape, the K31 has a cracked stock, which from what I understand is a arsenal repair, not a biggie! Reason I am going with Samco is obvious reason, price. I have a budget of $250 or so and really no more.

Heard good and bad of samco, but recently more of the good.

If you were looking at one of these two rifles for quality of manufacture, and ease of finding ammo, both locally and online, which would you choose? The Mauser in 8mm, or the K31 in 7.5x55 swiss?

Thanks all..

K31 is a great rifle! Finding Swiss GP11 ammo has not been difficult, and believe it or not, the price of this ammo has stayed reasonable even with the recent madness. The straight pull bolt action is really neat, and the Swiss Products scope mount and compensator (if you are so inclined) does not permanently alter the weapon. Mine is about MOA, and that with with just some "semi-serious" shooting for accuracy. It's certainly more accurate than me.

kwguy

Would you have any problems buying from Samco?
I hear the GP11 is just wonderful to shoot!

My best friend and I both owned M48s. My other best friend has a K31. All three ended up at the range a few years ago.

The K31 won the day in every conceivable way, with accuracy being the most obvious advantage.

To Jimbombo:

I haven't bought a firearm from Samco, only ammunition. That being said, I had no problems with the ammo purchase, it all was straightforward. The K31 was bought from Wideners.

And the GP11 is awesome. Pretty much match grade.

I just bought a second K31 for $315 and I'll keep the nicer of the two original. Whichever one looks rougher, I'll sell the stock and refinish the action/barrel and put it in a new Boyd's repro stock I bought. That will be the one I use regularly. I just wish I would have bought a few back when AIM sold them for $89/ea.

Midway had GP11 for $290/shipped per case but was backordered.

+1 for a K31. Great trigger, awesome straight pull action, one more round (get some chargers for it), detachable mag. Also takes standard 30 cal bullets if you reload. Oh, and the bayonet is truly a fine piece of cutlery.

Only downside to the Swiss would be tight clearances which probably would cause you trouble if you went out slogging it through the mud.

BOTH!!!!! Also, make sure to throw an enfield in there as well. If i could only get one though it would be the k31...I think. Or would it? I'm in this same predicament.

To BGT:

How was that Boyd's repro stock? Is it a good reproduction of the original military stock? I'm thinking of doing the same thing...

K31 All the way.
I have several Mausers of different flavors and they are great rifles with loads of history. That being said, I also have 2 K31's are are without a doubt the smoothest, most well made, most accurate Milsurp I own (I've given a home to a quite a few).
As far as ammo goes, the GP11 is Match Grade ammo and can still be found at reasonable costs. But you really want to learn to reload, as there are not that many Mfg of 7.5 Swiss. So factory ammo supply could be an issue in the future for some reason, who knows. But as already posted, the K31 takes a common .308 bullet.
I love my Mausers, but I've never seen a K31 that wasn't a tack driver.
The Swiss are in a class of their own when it comes to chocolate, watches, and rifles.

go with a k-31

id still buy an enfield over anything else.... but im an enfield nut. the k-31 is probably the most accurate wwII era bolt gun.

Many years ago, the rifles with cracked stocks were often the tail end of the shipment, with the more worn metal as well as stocks with cracks and bigger dings. The nicest went out first, so folks would see them and get the fever.

Generally, K-31s have been well kept, so the paradigm may have shifted. I would certainly want a no-questions return policy, and would not expect a pristine rifle.

I got 6 of them when they were cheap, and a couple of those are shaggier than the others. Still a lot of fun to shoot, and amazing craftsmanship.

If you'd had said a 98K, Brazilian 1908, a Swede of any model, or a VZ24... It'd be a close race. But close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.

K31, without a doubt, is the better choice. Plus, I'm biased: I own one, I'm a fan of Swiss guns, and a HUGE fan of the cartridge.:)

Ditto all those recommending the K-31. It is SO unique that I had to have one. It shoots better than any of my MINT 03-A3's. :D

Get the K31. I have both and the K31 is a much better and more accurate rifle. The K31 has a wonderful trigger too....chris3

Haven't shot or handled either rifle much so I'd go with the other users suggestions. Just wanted to chime in and mention that I purchased an unissued Yugo SKS 59/66A1 from Samco and it is a beautiful rifle. Everything that they said it would be and the transaction was uneventful. Based on my experience you should be fine going with them for the purchase. Good luck.

K-31; the Swiss know how to build a real shooter ( target rifle in military dress), I do have a Yugo 24/47 and love it,
1"-2" @ 100 and 3"-4" @ 200; but the Swiss reputation is much better from what I hear (and read).

That's like telling us you found a '69 Corvette Stingray with a little body damage for the same price as a new Kia. Hmmm....what to do...;)

I have purchased stuff from Samco for at least ten years without a hitch. I would also recommend the K-31 as the logical choice. I have noticed that a lot of the descriptions for K-31's mention cracked stocks but neither of mine have any cracks. Maybe it is just a CYA thing on their part......

Swiss K-31

Jimbombo, The K31 is a fine rifle. But--it's almost impossible as a shooter
for a left hander. Had one but sold it because it was just not for a lefty.
