Hornady 22 cal bullets

Two potential problems you might run into.

1. The smaller diameter bullet will not have as much case neck tension to prevent bullet movement in the case during feeding in an AR-15.

2. If you have a fast twist barrel and drive them fast, they may blow up in the air on the way to the target.

They are designed for a 1/14 twist at 2,500 FPS.
Not a 1/7 at 3,600 FPS.

No. .223 bullets are made for hornet. Always for ar-15 or a .223 caliber rifle use .224 bullets. So many times people get it confused. But that's why we are here to educate the up and commers and even the old timers.

You can use them. Accuracy will probably be just fine. Make sure you have good neck tension. They are intended to be shot in a few old .22 Hornet rifles with a .223 groove diameter, such as the Savage 23D. I knew Sierra made some like that. I did not know Hornady did.

You will probably need a different sizing ball for your die set. All the .224 bullets are manufactured to certain tollerances if you measure with a caliber that measures to 4 decimals they vary in diameter. All 22 caliber rifles of recent manufacture are .224.

Well, assuming most people want to hit what they shoot at?

A grey streak of lead vapor halfway to the target means you aren't going to hit anything at all.

Because the bullet blew up before it got where you pointed it.

If they don't take them back there will be a few that will buy them for use in the old style hornet rifles. Or you could load them light and shoot them and see how it goes.

Geist, NO do not use them, you are correct they are for the 222 hornet. AR bullets are .224 diamiter not .223 They may touch the line and groves (lead expands when heated) and depending on the twist rate you have on your AR they may just break up coming out of your barrel. the 45 grain bullets will work with a 1:14 or 1:12 twist rate, but your neck tension on the .223 bullet will be too light and most likely will give you bullet set-back and blow up your gun.

ive used them years ago in 223 bolt rifles.they seemed fine as far as accuracy.ive never used them in my ar but i would not hesitate too.usually i use 55 grn tho for all my rifles in 223.

Ridgerunner, you used .223 bullets instead of .224 for your 223 Rifle??

How many did you buy? if a bunch, you could have snatched out 5 pills to shoot a group. Maybe left a buck in the bottom of the bag if they didn't perform and then taken them back.
