I am getting ready to load my first 44 mag load for my Ruger. The Sierra load data for all 4 types of powder I am looking to try starts above every other books top end.

Why is the Sierra data starting above other book's max?

make sure youre not comparing it to 44 special in the other books. I dont have a sierra manual in front of me so thats all the advice i can give. Whats the loads in question?

I am comparing the data in the Sierra, Lymon and Hornady. All in 44 Rem Mag Rifle data. for a 240gr JHP

Why is the Sierra data starting above other book's max?
Different powder lot
Different barrel length
Different barrel type
Different testing equipment
Different weather
Different Lab
Different Lab conditions
Different bullet brand
Different bullet seating depth
Different primers
Different brass
Different ..... , Different ..... , Different ..... , Different .....

I think you get the idea ;)

I do understand about the differences in lots and temp and such. This is the reason I have all my books out to find a average. The test gun used in the Siera and Lymon are the same. My concern is that the Sierra starts 1-3 grn above the max of both Hornady and Lymon books.

The only thing I did notice is that in the Hornady and Lymon books, the rifle and pistol data are very smiler. The Siera pistol data is almost the same as the Hornady and Lymon Rifle data. Could it be that Siera is printing real max and not one that was reduced by the lawyers?

If you are using the hard copy of Sierra manual, number V I think, the book is fairly old relative to some other manuals on the market. Check the copyright dates

ArchAngelCD pretty much covered it.

Just start low and work up and you will be fine.

I would say start 10% lower then start load listed in the Sierra manual if you're worried.

Just to play devils advocate for a moment.

Could it be that Sierra actually loads up to actual SAAMI pressure limits with their bullets and does not have a few lawyers sitting on the sidelines saying "cut the top load by at least 20%"?

Just thinking out loud since I don't load 44 Mag.

I do know that in 357 Mag, 357 Sig and 357 Maximum that if you follow the Sierra book exactly, work up from their starting load with no substitutions of any kind, that in my guns, I see no pressure signs.

Now, substitute this, change that, modify this, all of a sudden Sierra's loads can get hot quick and show pressure signs.

So as usual, ArchAngelCD is right.

Definitely not. I called Sierra once concerning their rifle data which was listed as a "Max" load, but which was far below SAAMI pressure specs, and they told me that they "didn't know what the pressure was, that's just where they decided to stop". At least as far as their rifle data goes, Sierra does not publish load data any where's near SAAMI pressure specs.

Due to the different bullet and other related components tested, pressures are different, as Archangel described.

And someone correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't rifle data typically higher than pistol data? I think yes, at least it is in my books that segregate the two.

I also see wide spread variances between powder and bullet manufacturer's all the time. And if I'm not using one of the bullets specific to the data, I just calculate the average starting charge and work up from there in reasonable increments. This method has worked without getting me into trouble in 30+ yrs. of reloading.

Lyman shows a Sierra 240 grainer in it's handgun recipes section along with a Speer. But it doesn't in it's rifle section, only the Speer. But for the Speer the recipes are exactly the same in the rifle section as they are in the handgun section. In the handgun section, the Sierra recipes are significantly lower than those for the Speer. Confusing...ain't it. What Ruger carbine are you loading for? I load my 77/44 with the same handgun data as I use for the 629s and the Marlin lever. Any quality 240gr JSP/JHP over H110/W296 or IMR 4227....... about a half a grain under max.

Published load data is just a guide anyway, it is not a Bible.

No current 44 Mag data that I know about is as hot as data used in the 1960's or 70's.
