If you go to the South Store, Leon is great for help. Any of the armorers are helpful in helping you inspect the innards of the Garand you choose.
be careful, Garands are like Lays potato chips. i have never left the South Store with just one rifle.
Going to the store is an interesting and fun experience. Go with most of our paper work filled out except for the actual order form. The same paper work will be required as if you were to mail order the rifle. I believe they can notarize the necessary forms there if you can't do that in advance.
Turn in the paper work when you get there and the nice ladies will be working on that stuff while you are shopping. It will make the final process go quicker.
If you can wait a few days, you can avoid the Alabama sales tax by having the rifle shipped. The shipping is less than the tax. if you buy ammunition, the sales tax is less than the shipping. so, play that game.

If one were to order one, would it be better to request a Walnut stock, or would birch or beech be fine?

Exactly. I'm gonna cherry pick a couple for myself and use the rest as trading stock- there are lots of good folks who want these rifles.

You can request GI wood but most SG's come with new birch. I have not heard of many new walnut stocks on SG's like Fishbed received. Specials, yes, but not SG's. I have only had one request for GI wood filled. I just depend on what they have at the time. I am sure many will try to get good GI wood.
Going to the South Store isn't much of an option for many of us. So, we have to go the online route. If you live close to one of the stores. That is obviously the best choice.

if i'd known they had started putting the orange birch stocks on the service grades, then i would've spent the extra money for a special.

Agreed, better but not walnut.
I have 5 M1 Garands right now.
At one time I had about 20 of the rifles, sold most off, kept the best of the best.
There is a finite amount of M1 rifles left in the world, when they do dry up you won't see them very often and they will be expensive when you do.
Now is the time if you don't have one and you do want one...

From an email I received from CMP neither store has garands in stock except for special grade due to the backlog of orders - call before making a trip.

Should of posted this last night -- from 18 March 13 EMail from CMP
RIFLES: The CMP currently has over 12,000 unfilled orders for rifles, ammo and other items. We also still have thousands of M1 Garands. These rifles all require inspection and repair and grading before being put up for sale. At times the customer demand exceeds the amount that our staff can make ready for sale. This is the case now with the field and service grade M1 Garand rifles. As the CMP armory produces the rifles, they are all being used to fill existing mail orders, some from as far back as the beginning of January. Until we catch up on mail orders, there will not be any field or service grade rifles in the stores at Anniston or Camp Perry. For now, we only have the M1 Service Grade Special ($950), M1 CMP Special ($995), M1C, M1D, M1NM, and Kimber model .82 (.22LR) in stock at both stores. We expect this to continue until late June.
I placed an order in mid January -- H&R Service Grade -- My assumption is that I will get it in April, so about 3 months for delivery now. The delivery time will be different on what type of rifle you order thought.

So that's a new production stock, correct?
Yes new commercial/Boyds/Dupage stock stamped CMP. You may still end up with a Birch stock but most of the commecrcial stocks on Service Grades are now Walnut

I went ahead and placed an order today for an HRA service grade. I included a sticky note asking for a walnut stock if possible, hopefully I'll get it. I also included a small donation. I do want a SA Garand still, hopefully this one will hold me over in the meantime.

Okay, most of us will never win the real lottery (anyone?), but plenty of us have won the gun lottery. Learn as much as you can- manufacturers- serial numbers- which numbers are correct for this trigger group, ect. There are people who are looking to unload service rifles that have no idea what they had.
Opportunity found me at an estate sale in Virgina. An SA first batch serial number receiver (*which was glass bedded), correct trigger group, and I was in heaven. I knew the basics of the M1, but floored to find out that this was a National Match. The very low serial number wasn't typically used unless.....blah, blah. Won't give you the boring details. The point is: DON'T GIVE UP. Think outside the box. Auctions, estate sales, and I've even gotten some great leads from my gunsmith. The Garand is a rifle you will have forever and it is a true privilege and honor to own such a unique piece of history.
