I am down to the Weatherby Vanguard Series 2 Stainless Synthetic, and the Remington 700 SPS Varmint. The first has a 24 inch barrel, and the second has a 26" barrel. Aside from the that they are pretty similar. The Remington is about a pound and a half heavier (a plus for me, range shooting mostly).

Which would you pick, or would you pick something else?

Just throwing around ideas for a range gun. I have a Barrett 50, and pistols in .327, 10mm, and .41 magnum, so I thought I would get something normal...

I have the Remington and would recommend it over the weatherby...especially for range shooting. Lots more options for changes to the rifle as time goes by. Will be more accurate most likely.

I prefer the Weatherbys over Remingtons, but both are good guns. I will not buy a gun though from an Anti-Constitutional state, so no more sending my money to NY

Flip a coin - they use the same scope mounts. I have both.

One consideration is in the long run more is available for the Rem 700 including gunsmiths that are set up for it. This may come into play if you need to replace a worn out barrel.

If you don't plan on changing anything get whatever suits your needs better. My WBY is more of a standard deer rifle and my Rem is more of a heavy range rifle.

I would have also considered a Savage.

So you'll send your money to Japan?

In a Heartbeat. :D

I would rather support a countries economy who isnt communist, like NY is. ;)

I like some of those Savages. I will have to dig through them. I have not looked at the Winchesters much, although I love my Win model 12 20 gauge with a 37,564 serial number...

i cant comment on weatherby, and since im looking for a new bolt action soon ill have to consider them, but ive lost faith in remington products, ive been whitnessing poor quality control on a few products of late... i just cant put my faith in them anymore... maybe these were isolated bad apples, maybe theyve decided to cut corners to save costs, i dont know, but thats my experience

I have the Weatherby Vanguard 2 Heavy barrel Varmint in .308. I have shot the Remington and don't like the fit for me. I wont tell you not to get the Remington, but I really like the Van2. Mine shoots around an inch for 5 shots, but still looking for its favorite load.....I also have a Howa 1500 in .270 just so you know. I paid around $600 for the Weatherby, post Newtown.....

Good luck,
LNK

just to throw something else in the mix, I came across a promo video for the new Mauser m12 today. It looks pretty sexy.

I'm a Remington man. The Model 700 is the same to the gun world as the small block chevy is to the hot rod world. Lots and lots of accessories. Lots of Remingtons win matches, not so much with Weatherby. My second choice would be Winchester. Good Luck, Lightman

I vote for Sako too, but then that's what I bought. I like Tikka's too. I do have a Remington PSS in .308 that's a tack-driver, but it's got $3000 worth of stocks, rings and scope to help it along.
