you do need to inform them. I'm not sure of Fedex process. UPS is:

-show up at UPS HUB (not the ups store) and tell them what you're shipping (ground is the only option)
-workers there tell you they aren't allowed to help you with hazardous material, tell you to use their phone to call the UPS hazard shipping line
-call their 1800 number, get told to write "ORM-D Small Arms Cartridges" on the outside of the box, and draw a rectangle around it.
-ship ground as normal once you've followed their instructions.

Print up their web page and take it with you. It will save you some frustration when Nervous Nellie behind the counter starts yapping.

A week or two ago I asked the UPS driver about shipping ammo ... he checked and found out that UPS does not ship ammo ... I thought he was wrong and called their hazardous material support center at 800-554-9964 ... they confirmed that UPS does not ship ammo ... I contacted FedEx and they said they will ship ammo but you have to open a FedEx account online and schedule for them to pick up the shipment (you can't take it to the FedEx place and ship it).

Huh , wonder why the brown UPS truck dropped off ammo to me last week and is deliverying more today???

UPS DOES SHIP AMMO
Ammunition must be shipped separately from packages that contain firearms (including handguns).
Ammunition will be transported only when packaged and labeled in compliance with 49 C.F.R. § 172 regarding hazardous materials shipments, and must be shipped in accordance with the UPS Guide for Shipping Ground and Air Hazardous Materials

^^^yep, UPS delivered my shotgun ammo from Cabela's, no issue

I assume a place that sells ammo has hazmat training and so UPS will ship ammo for them.

If anyone here calls the UPS hazardous material support center at 800-554-9964 and is told that UPS ships ammo for individuals without hazmat training then I'd like to see that posted here. I was told that I cannot ship ammo, that they had shipped ammo in the past due to confusion, but that the ammo shortage has caused them to focus on their policy, and I was told I had to have hazmat training to ship ammo UPS.

Loaded ammo is not hazmat, only primers and powder. Makes sense doesnt it?

UPS does ship ammo. You just need the the ORM-D stickers(or write it on the package). My company has a regular daily pickup so I just take ut to work and take it to the mail room. Ships for same price as any other package

UPS ships ammo every day of the week ... they just brought me 1720 rounds of 7.62 x 54R.

I called them. They said put a label on the outside shipping box marked "Cartridges, Small Arms ORM-D", package the rounds in factory packaging or similar, pack the factory boxes in a sturdy shipping box and take it to a real UPS hub (not a retail store) or call for a driver pick up.

In addition to the exceptions allowed for "Limited Quantities," shipments of ORM-D materials are not subject to the shipping paper requirements of subpart C of part 172 of 49 CFR unless the material meets the definition of a hazardous substance, a hazardous waste, or a marine pollutant or unless offered or intended for transportation by aircraft.

The UPS Hazardous Material Support Center told me that complete rounds of ammunition do not meet the definition of explosive or flammable for hazardous substance, it is ORM-D which they thought meant Other Regulated Material-Domestic and means that it can't go by air. This spreadsheet, which you can download from UPS shows that Cartridges, Small Arms are ORM-D and if shipped ground not subject to HAZMAT regulations:

Notice in the three "ground shipment columns" of that above table that the only requirement for Cartridges, Small Arms is, "Package must bear ORM-D marking"

That's odd ... two weeks ago my UPS driver checked with his boss and said they could not ship ammo, I thought they were mistaken and so I called the 800 number but they also said I could not ship ammo unless I had hazmat training ... just now I called again and was told that I can ship ammo UPS ground to the lower 48 States ... sheesh.

I was told that I needed to be hazmat certified too per DOT regs.

I literally shipped some ammo last week to 2 different locations. Packaged it up, wrote ORD-M with a rectangle around it and shipped it out. I will be shipping more this week now that I think of it. I will post if I suddenly have any issues.

Most UPS people need to be trained by consumers. I had to stand there for 2 hours a few years back 'til they went through about 5 levels of supervisors. Now I get big happy smiles and no hassle at all sending ammo.
-Must be packed well.
-Must be 60lbs. or less.
-Now must use the new black and white diamond label with no mention of small arms cartridges.
-Must go Ground.
-No special hazmat rules,fees or rates.
-No signature required.
-Can't ship to HI, AK, or Catalina Island, CA.
That's it. Anything else said by a UPS employee is straight out of their butt.
