Situation as it is today, any 55g bullets you can find

Where are you finding ANY 55 or 62 grain bullets?

I bought a bunch of Hornady 55 grain soft-points at a good price right before the election; I think their catalog number is 2266. Now I wish I had bought a BUNCH of 'em. I haven't had a chance to shoot any yet because of the weather*, so I don't know how accurate they are -- but how could they be bad with a flat base and a tiny soft point?

If you're shooting extremely long ranges, you might want a boattail, like most FMJ's.

General Target practice? That means many things to many people. I have had good luck with bulk loading either Rem or Hornady 55gr sp bullets and the usually range from $70-$100 per thousand. If I want increased performance then I go with the Balistic tip, they are very accurate and with impressive expansion but can cost 2x what the cheaper bulk bullets run.
I saw some Vmax sell for $70+ per 100 last weekend, couldn't believe my eyes.
In most of my rifles the difference between the bulk and premium bullets is negligible for prarie dogs and coyotes out to a couple hundred yds so I shoot more than 10 to 1 over the premium bullets.

With the exception of bulk FMJ, I've found almost any major brand .22 bullets to be quite accurate. Take your pick.

Is that new FMJ's or pulled ones that are inaccurate? (I've been reloading a long time, but just getting started for rifles)

FMJ new or used are not as accurate because the jacket hole is in the base.

And that makes the bases uneven.

I use v-max or Barnes 53 grain. (All-copper makes them close to the same length with lighter weight.)

I've never found a bad 55gr Hornady bullet. And I've loaded plenty of every 55gr bullet Hornady offers except the NTX and GMX, and the Moly coated bullets. In fact, at 100 yards I don't even see a difference in point of impact when I put them all over 26.5gr of Varget in LC brass, primers don't matter either between CCI, Tula, and Winchester. The V-Max do shoot somewhat smaller groups for me though, but they get pricey, so I buy Z-Max instead, same thing, different color tip. Seems like a lot of people stay away from the Z-Max because they're too "gimmicky," still great bullets though, and cost about the same as Hornady FMJ w/c or SP w/c if you buy in 500 count quantities.

could you please share where you are finding those at that price range....that's a decent price for 500 nowadays....

Any flat based bullet with no exposing lead on the bottom should shoot very well.

FMJ new or used are not as accurate because the jacket hole is in the base.

You might not get them today or next week for that matter but most of the large suppliers still sell them without screwing the public.
I have some on order but don't know when they will be delivered, best advise I can give is to keep about 1000 in reserve and order more when you tap into those. You might have to adjust your shooting habits in these lean times but you will at least have some affordable ammo.

Sierra does make Match bullets in .224. My favorite is the 52 gr BTHP. Less than 0.5" groups at 100 yards with a heavy barrel bolt gun.

There really is no 55gr bullet that is good, their all great if you can find them. Target shooting, any will work. Hunting, either look for soft point or polymer tip.

I like the Sierra GameKing 55gr bullet best. (Part #1390) Not only are they very accurate you can use the same load for hunting too. I see no less accuracy from that 55gr GameKing than from the 52gr and 53gr MatchKings.

ill agree with some of the others. Hard to go wront with a sierra, a bt or a vmax

The V-max is my preference.

I've had great results with these, and their soft points http://www.midsouthshooterssupply.com/item.asp?sku=0000422455VNE500 too. Lots of BANG for very little BUCK. The soft points shoot < .5 MOA in my Savage 12FV and CZ-527 Varmint. 3/4-1" in the AR

I stopped in Walmart this morning, and they had a few boxes of these, so I bought them. I was happy they had anything.
