What's the ballpark velocity I should be seeing with a cast 255gr SWC over 7.5gr Unique fired out of a 16" Rossi 92? Here's why I ask.
Up until a couple weeks ago I had only loaded jacketed bullets in 45LC specifically the XTP 250gr bullet. I was used to seeing right around 1000fps with the XTP on top of 8 grains of Unique in the Rossi.
Well I finally took the plunge with cast bullets and ordered a batch of 255gr SWC. The results surprised me. I started with 7.5 gr of Unique. The first couple shots registered a tad under 1300fps. This seemed too fast and I thought the Chrony was acting up because sometimes it'll give odd results and I have to power cycle it. I tried again for several shots but got the same results. I wasn't seeing any signs of over pressure in the brass and the rifle didn't seem to recoil any harder than usual.
Straight out of Lyman's 49th edition it says the 255gr SWC will max out with 8.5 grains of Unique at 1110 fps in a 16" barrel. What am I missing here?
