What's the ballpark velocity I should be seeing with a cast 255gr SWC over 7.5gr Unique fired out of a 16" Rossi 92? Here's why I ask.

Up until a couple weeks ago I had only loaded jacketed bullets in 45LC specifically the XTP 250gr bullet. I was used to seeing right around 1000fps with the XTP on top of 8 grains of Unique in the Rossi.

Well I finally took the plunge with cast bullets and ordered a batch of 255gr SWC. The results surprised me. I started with 7.5 gr of Unique. The first couple shots registered a tad under 1300fps. This seemed too fast and I thought the Chrony was acting up because sometimes it'll give odd results and I have to power cycle it. I tried again for several shots but got the same results. I wasn't seeing any signs of over pressure in the brass and the rifle didn't seem to recoil any harder than usual.

Straight out of Lyman's 49th edition it says the 255gr SWC will max out with 8.5 grains of Unique at 1110 fps in a 16" barrel. What am I missing here?

Ballpark velocity is Super Slow, likely less than 1,000fps. Why such a light load when you have a very robust Model 1892 action? Personally, if I had such a rifle (drool, drool) and was using Unique (which I wouldn't), I would be loading it with somewhere between 9.0 and 10.0gr. I use 9.0gr of Unique with my 255gr and 265gr cast SWC's in my S&W 25-5, and it is considered a moderate load. Just MHO.

differences could be the ratio of bore diameter to bullet diameter, bullet hardness, rifling, case capacity, primer differences, powder batch deviation and star alignment.

Looking through Water's Pet Loads on 45 Colt in Winchester Trapper Unique was too fast and pressures were high. He had better results with slower powders, 800-X, AA-7, 4227. He also advised against magnum-style loads which showed problems with case base distortion, which caused problems with the ejector.

I agree, a very common load for the .45 Colt is 9.0gr Unique under a 250/255gr lead bullet. It seems very strange to me you are getting 1300 fps with a charge of only 7.5gr Unique, even in the longer barrel. Something isn't right with those numbers.
