Bought my wife a new j-frame revolver

I looked up the gun. Nice purchase. I want one.

If not, you chose just about the worst gun for her to learn with.

Cool gun.. You can't beat a J Frame S&W, I've been shooting them for over 35 years. The Airweight is going to be a little snappy on recoil, I'd go with target loads (wad cutters) for the range. For carry or night stand duty, HPs are more than manageable for the distance the gun was designed for. They are a great carry gun because of weight - so everything is a trade off.

My wife also chose a j-frame (642) for concealed carry.

Just as many women may have been pushed wrongly to choose one; many other women are perfectly suited for them.

I have a Talo 642. Nice gun.

Snub nosed is my carry gun of choice. Lost my model36 to my wife after buying several other models "I knew" would be perfect for her!

My buddy installed an Apex Tactical Spring kit. It lowered the trigger weight from 13 lbs to 9 lbs. it now, feels like an LCR trigger.

If you think an airwieght has similiar recoil to a 9mm, you are in for a big surprise, especially if you put 38 +p's in it

My 642 with what they now call "+P" rounds is not terribly difficult to manage, but I choose non +P for carry and range practice. Three reasons:

1) No BG is going to think, I bet he's just got regular .38SPL in there, so I'm good.

2) I can shoot smaller groups with less effort with non +P. Missing a BG with rounds that are going 75FPS second faster makes no sense.

3) +Ps hurt after a while, and that discourages sufficient practice.

I'm like most female shooters I know (and the OP's lady, I suspect) in one way at least--I don't care if my factory carry ammo and my accurate but moderate-power handloads are not considered macho and don't win me any velocity contests. I do care about getting hits. With a snubby, that's even more important.

The ladies are not the only ones who find +p's annoying in a J Frame.

And I, still haven't met the superman who is willing to hold the target when someone is shooting non +P's.

IMO he ruined a perfectly good trigger.

My baby doll shoots a 1975 m60 j frame she took from me many years ago.
