I use single action revolvers to hunt mainly hogs, use minimum .357, but prefer .44 mag or .45 colt. I am gonna hunt hogs with a .44 mag carbine with 20" barrel, what kinda bullet works best? round nose, flat nose, gas check? what grain etc. in a lever action. new to me in this type of hunting, used to long range bolt actions, revolvers just for backup.

Out of a 20" carbine, any good name brand 240 grain SP, or JHP, or FP cast lead bullet should do what needs to be done at iron sight range.

Your main concern is which brand is most accurate & functions reliably in your carbine.

No real need to worry about the bullet if the carbine 4-F's with it.

A hog and any .44 mag .240 grain bullet out of a carbine is gonna be DRT, or pretty close to it within a few yards.

I have had issues with soft point bullets not passing through. If you get a head or neck shot you have a dead hog. Lung shots might not leave an exit wound. If you are loading you own a cheap lead bullet will work as good as anything.

RC pretty well summed it up. I use the same ammo I reload for my .44 revolvers in my carbines. For hunting, outta the carbines, I've found jacketed to be a tad more accurate, so that's what I use in both. I prefer a Nosler 240 gr JSP over 23.5-24 gr of H110/W296 or a full case of IMR4227.

I have gotten away from hollow points with loads averaging above 1800 fps. I've had a couple of failures due to bullets fragmenting on skulls and shoulders. Choose a bullet designed for higher velocities with heavy construction. Most soft points or hard cast semi wadcutters should work fine.

Ive killed several with my Rossi 92 .44Mag. It likes the Winchester (white box) ammo in 240 gr flat point. That ammo will knock them flat! But as previously stated, probably any bullet configuration would work just fine at iron sight ranges.
