Your mosin m44 experience

I have to say I'm quite pleased with my Polish m44. Like new condition, little more thump than my Finn 28, and everyone just loves the fireball. Haven't done any 100yrd shots with it yet but I'd be curious to see how it does up against the Finn.

i have a chinese t53, made in october of 53 if i read the date code right, that had a fugly stock (almost no finish on it) that i chose to paint (better than leaving it bare/dirty so please dont flame me) i also got a cocking knob peep (non-permanent mod) and fiber optic front sight (rear sight was gone, and front sight shot really low and right with, by about 7 inches at 50 yds., when peep was installed, permanent. original post was too long and bent left) old sight was silver-soldered and took a gunsmith about an hour of work to remove w/o causing damage.
after that it shot exactly to point of aim at 100 with bayo taken off. i get 2-3 inch groups at that distance. with bayo on... 14 inches (no clue as to why, out or in the results are the same). boy does it light up the range even in daytime. trigger is VERY light after i had it "finned". about 3 Lbs. before: umm... the trigger was heavy, lets just say that. (13 Lbs. ) bolt is smooth though. barrel looked like crap till i ran a bunch of copper solvent through it and gave it a very good thrice over. now it is shiney and rifling is strong. got it for $100 about 6 months ago

Mosin 91/30

I have several mosin nagants of each Model. None are highly accurate -UNTIL - I added a Timney trigger to one. The 100 yard groups went from about 8 inches to about 2. But I am happy with all of them

How can you tell if there is a Timney trigger in it? I ask because of my two M44s, . . . the "beater" 1944 model has a fairly heavy trigger, after some takeup. The good one, 1946, has a fairly light trigger with just a small amount of travel before release.

timney triggers look like the attached image there is also a huber concepts trigger which looks more or less like a normal mosin trigger which also lightens the pull a bit, not as good as a timney though.
another reason the trigger might be good is it may have been "finned" which is to say that someone put 2 slight bends in it to lighten it. i did that to mine and it is now a 3 lb trigger down from about 13. i have never felt a trigger that heavy before or since i first fired my t53.

Mosins already have safeties. They're just a pain to operate, but very effective once enabled.

it is true that the original mosin safety is effective, but in some cases, like mine, the safety does not engage because when the cocking knob safety is rotated, the bolt rotates a little with it and on mine for example dropping the bolt back down disengages the safety. not ideal but the gun works fine otherwise and i think it is an issue with the fact that none of the parts on this particular bolt match. still headspaces fine so i am ok with it. my safety is between my ears, and if i have to move it i do so without it loaded and the bolt open/removed. that said i dont rely on ANY mechanical safety. they can and do fail

I know they got that bolt safety deal, I was thinking that the timney kit added a more conventional button style safety?

The M44 is the only rifle I own that will kill and cook your deer at the same time.....

Riven Cole: If your bolt is turning with the safety knob you need to completely disassemble your bolt, clean all the parts with WD-40, kerosene, or some other solvent to remove the hardened cosmoline and crust, then coat it lightly with grease or gun oil and reassemble it. The bolt should stay in place when you turn the "safety" knob which is actually the end of the firing pin.

@kingcheese: the timney adds a lever safety to the top of the gun.
@gottahaveone: that looks about right.
@steel horse rider: bolt is completely clean and greased/oiled. i know whats causing this. i am just not interested in using the mosins original safety enough to fix it, especially when the gun works just fine. like i said: my safety is between my ears. (read: my brain.)

I have a Mosin question that is somewhat along the lines of this discussion thread. In a moment of weakness last week (wink, wink), I bought a crate of 91/30s from Classic Firearms. The rifles are all in decent shape, no hexes, but 7 Tulas. the rest are Izzys. One of the Tulas has sniper markings, but it has a standard bolt. Has anyone else encountered this? BTW - had a great experience buying from CF.

You bought a crate of 91/30s from CF in a "moment of weakness"? You're my new hero!

As for your question, there are quite a few ex-snipers out there that have the sniper markings/plugged-bolt-holes that have been converted back to standard M91/30s. The bolt is replaced with a standard bolt and it's renumbered to match the barrel. The Soviets produced more sniper rifles than the rest of the world put together in WWII*, so there are lots of ex-snipers out there.

20, I believe. Plus, with the right kind of glass top, you get a cool looking coffee table. Of course, your house will smell like cosmoline for the rest of eternity. I'm still looking for a downside.
