Question about my most irresponsible thing......

Hello all, just want to say thanks to any future input I get from you all from this question.

With that said here it goes. So I went out of town with the wife today and did some shopping. Well before we left I decided to carry my Taurus .38 Spl and some extra ammunition. This is where I make my first mistake. Instead of taking the ammunition holder I took 5 extra rounds and hurriedly threw them into my pocket. (careless on my part).

Well somewhere during the 5 hours of running around, shopping, etc and the 6 stores in a mall that we visited I apparently lost one round of ammunition.

I found this out only after making the 45minute return trip and emptying my pocket and discovering a hole.

So I notified all the stores I visited and let them know what had potentially happened and that if they find it to call the local law enforcement to properly dispose of it.

My question is this. What else (if anything) should I do?

Because at this very moment I am not only embarrassed, but also worried of any troubles that may arise. I am generally a top tier person when it comes to safety and responsibility, and have no idea why I failed to be that person today besides becoming complacent.
 
.I believe that as your name is not on the round, you have nothing to be concerned about. One round is not cause for alarm.

It's ammunition, not uranium. I wouldn't have even called the stores. Now had you lost the Taurus I would be more concerned.
 
Obviously you are upset about this.

But, I would have realized I had a hole in my pocket, said to myself, "Crap, I have a hole in my pocket" and never given it another thought.
 
Welcome MSHORT. May you enjoy your stay. You did what you thought was right, so who is anyone to criticize your personal decisions?

I don't see many judgemental members of this forum, but there is a lot of advice and sometimes humorous questions, not to be taken too seriously. We strive to take the high road here.

Again welcome, and if you feel you did the right thing concerning this situation, then you certainly did.

I would thoroughly search your car in the creases, and underneath the seats, as things tend to fall out of pockets when sitting down, unless a hole is in them.

Guess not. I'm guessing the whole notifying of law enforcement is a bit much?

I am just following what I as a store employee/manager would have wanted to be informed. :eek: Also as this is the first time something like this has happened to me I guess I may have overreacted? I am what I consider to be safe and responsible. I follow the law to the letter, and do not do anything that would jeopardize my or anyone else's safety.

I have been around firearms and such since I was 10 and was always told to do the right thing if you screw up, and notify those affected if you feel it is needed. Also me being a CO kinda puts me in a mind set that I should have freaking known and acted better when handling the ammo than I did. I have bee trained to be more responsible and I did something completely careless in my eyes.

Maybe I am just overreacting and over thinking it. :confused:

my main concern in loosing a "defense article" would be if some kid found it and hurt themselves with it.....

so if i lost a gun/ knife/ pepper spray.....i would call the stores and let them know......

but seeing as someone cant really hurt themselves with a single bullet, i wouldnt worry about it.
 
I find bullets all the time in stores. You just have to know where to look.

If anything the cleaning crew will sweep it up with the rest of the filth and it will be sent to a landfill somewhere. Nothing to worry about, if you're lucky some kid like me will find it and think, "Wow cool!" and stuff it in my pocket when mom isn't looking.
 
Losing a round is not something any of us would want to do, but it does happen. Have any of us ever found a "live" round where you wouldn't expect to? I have, once.

I expect to find a few complete rounds in a bucket of brass, both with and without primer strikes, and as I recall that has been the case in every bucket I've sorted. But I once came upon a .32ACP round in a crack in the parking lot concrete outside a gun show venue. It looked like it had been dropped that day. I pocketed, an it sits in a row with all the other sundry rounds which for one reason or another I won't shoot.
 
Uh, a kid could certainly hurt himself with a bullet. Esspeicailly with youtube at his side.

if i kid is old enough to hurt himself with a bullet following plans from youtube......hes old enough to hurt himself with just about any object in standard home/ garage......so im not going to worry about a lost bullet.
 
People lose and find all manner of things all the time. I found an antique 30 cal round last week on our warehouse floor. Same week found an entire box of old .32 ball in an old box of junk. My real goal is find the upper for the full auto lower I found in a pile of alley scrap metal about a month ago.

There is a local columnist Joe Souceray, who refers to countertops, floors, etc. as the "common surface savings and loan". Awesome.
 
M-Short, I commend your caution and your sense of responsibility. I'm not sure I'd have reacted as you did; frankly I'd be more worried about losing a tablet of prescription medication. More likely to do harm if found by a child. BUT, if this makes you more mindful in the future (not frightened or paranoid, just mindful), that's OKAY. Welcome to THR. :)

Thats awfully naive. Are you telling me, if you were ten years old, and had no knowledge or experience you would'nt have a FIELD DAY if you found a bullet? Understand some kids (probably most) are not exposed to these sorts of things. So when you find a .38 special bullet, as a ten year old kid, your curiousity goes wild! So maybe you do a youtube search on fun ways to mess with bullets... and bam, dead kid.. dead friend, who knows...

All im saying is a stray bullet can in fact pose a danger. I know were all very familiar with the dangers of firearms and their catridges. But growing up in massachusetts i had no clue. And maybe i was a stupid kid. But i would have DEFINITLY found a way to make it go off. And with the advent of youtube, It wouldnt have taken more then 5 minutes.
 
A round of ammo? Simply do not trouble your mind about it. I'd be mostly upset that I lost about $.25-$.50, ammo's expensive these days!

Just a little, but it was in concern for the safety of others and driven by your beating up on yourself.

The value of the lesson will be worth the embarrassment.

Yeah I am more concerned what could happen accidentally if a kid were to do something silly. However, I am becoming more and more relaxed about it now that I am getting more viewpoints from some more people. Still sucks that it happened either way :(

unless the kids detonate the round inside a barrel.....it is very unlikely they would face life threatening injuries.....

smashing it with a rock/hammer or throwing it in a fire will likely send the brass flying off.....and while dangerous....it is very unlikely to be fatal.

if a 10 year old found it.....yeah, there is a good chance they would google stupid stuff to do with it.......but chances are good theyll also find videos on how to do stupid stuff with gasoline, matches, spray paint, sparklers, ect......so does that mean we should lock kids in a padded room until they grow up?
 
Good thing it wasn't in a school; at the local middle school, they found "a bullet" and locked down the whole building, brought in search dogs, and searched all the lockers for a gun.

I wouldn't worry about dropping a round anywhere you are "allowed" to have a gun. I found a full 1911 magazine in a grocery store (in MT) once and took it to customer service where the lady behind the counter called over the intercom, "Attention shoppers, if you have lost a Chip McCormick magazine with Federal ammo, please pick it up at the service desk." An embarrassed man in a wheel chair rolled up to retrieve it.
 
Three weeks ago I lost my phone and while i was rummaging around in the lost-and-found bin I found two claymores and a LAW rocket.

All things considered the .38 won't be too big a deal. I'd guess that the odds are someone will find it and throw it in the trash can.
 
It happens. When I lived in Indiana the clerk of our church board found a live .38 in the church office and got all excited. ( I was the pastor)
You should have seen the look on his face when I took it and said "Yep that one belongs to my wife alright."
