hello all. this year has been a memorable one for hunting with me. it's the first year that I have managed to fill both of my spring hunting tags and is also the first time that I killed a game animal with open sights. to add to that, it's also my first black bear.
weighing in at just around 250 LBs, he is nothing special by national standards but for these mountains and being just after hibernation he is fairly respectable.

I took him with my Japanese type 44 arisaka carbine in it's original 6.5x50mm.

Those are the types of memories that last a lifetime and provides the motivation we sometimes need to go back out when the weather is foul and the game is scarce.

yep, I was starting to get discouraged. turkey and bear only run for 1 month in the spring and the bears usually don't break hibernation until the second or third week and they just now started popping out the last week of the season so seeing one of these guys on the game cam we have set up was a bit of a pick me up...
 
I expect to see good things in the recipes section: BBQd bear, bear burgers, beer&bear bratwurst, braised shoulder of bear, bear kabobs, black bear with brown gravy ....

I'm still waiting on venison loaf in the oven. I'm kinda hungry.
 
the rifle is described above the second pic. it's a type 44 japanese arisaka cavalry carbine. the action is similar to a 1896 swede with modifications. I think as of yesterday morning it has beat out my enfield no4 as my favorite military surplus rifle.

I was thinking it looked kind of like an Arisaka. The Type 44 is something of a rarity, and yours is in beautiful condition.
 
yep, at first I didn't even want it but I was after a type 99 since it's easier to find 7.7 ammo and reloading components and the guy offered both rifles and some cash for a springfield sniper I had and now I couldn't be happier with this little guy. it's rarity was one of the reasons I picked it for what is really my first challenge hunt.
 
I used home loads. the short barrel of the type 44 makes it difficult to load very high velocity. I pushed as far as I was willing and just about reached the sierra book max load and my loads only chronographed out to 2250 FPS. I was using 140gr nosler accubonds with 34.5gr of IMR4064 behind it. they are super accurate but weight retention was horrible, I think if I ever try to hunt with it again I will try speer deep curls.
