June 19. I wake up and call the bank number to see what is in my checking account. My first social security check has been deposited. Oh yeah, got some money. Then went to the range. I shot two of my pistols. One quite well and one quite poorly. I asked the gun shop guy if he had any M&P Shields in 9mm. He said no. Then one appeared from nowhere. I traded my nameless pistol in for the Shield. On the way home I decided to stop by the little gun shop in back of the unfinished furniture shop to see if there was any chance they might have some powder. Unique or Winchester 231. The guy says no. Then he comes out of the back with some 231. Says the boss is going to be mad as I'm not supposed to sell this but I'm selling it anyway. I don't have days where things go well more than two or three times a year. This was a good one. :D

If I had a day like that I would have bought some lottery tickets too! Enjoy your new found good fortune.

I always imagine that I will keel over with a wrench in my hand. Retiring seems so far away, so unlikely. If I ever did get the chance to trade in the toolbox, I might want to be a teacher or mentor of some sort.

You are blessed to enjoy the fruits of your labor.

I get nice letters from social security every year or so congratulating me for how much money i've paid in taxes and what my supposed benefits will be in the future. it only frustrates me because i have ZERO confidence in that program's sustainability.

enjoy while there is still money left.

by the time i retire, social security will have gone down as one of the world's greatest ponzi schemes.

Ya I'm certainly not banking on it being there when I get there.

Sounds like a good day Cpt CT!

UPDATE-- On June 20 I get a call from one of my six doctors. I am told I now have cancer. This will go nicely with my heart condition, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, kienbock disease, and bad back. See, I told you I don't have too many good days. :)

Sorry to hear that. Keep your head up though, things can ALWAYS be worse.

I was diagnosed with a terminal illness on my birthday a few years back. Eventually I decided I wasn't going to let the fact that I was dying control my day-to-day perspective.

They say I could have died at any point and there's no way to know how much time I have left. Its not in my hands, so I try not to dwell on it; I'm just thankful for the time I've had, and looking forward to meeting my maker, whether that's tomorrow or in another 50 years. So far, every day has been a good day.

sort of grounds us back to how fragile life is..

i had the famous widow maker with a 98% blockage.. (like james gandolfini) i just sat down in public and said i think im done.. (they got to me in time)

praying for ya..

Well, this thread took a decidedly negative turn. Sorry to hear about the cancer and terminal illness.

Someone said it correctly, we are not in control of our time, but we are in control on how we use the time we have.

A sports announcer made a comment about a players status of being "day to day" and remarked "aren't we all?" That is so true. I just stopped reading this post and prayed for both of you. I do know who IS in control.

Best wishes and hope you are doing well.

On another note, I spent many hours (and quite a bit of payday $$) in that "little gun shop in back of the unfinished furniture shop" when I lived in CT...:D
