I shot the Ruger mini 30 against the M-4 in 300 blackout and I was VERY surprised to see the Ruger was much easier to hit at 120 yards than was the M-4.

I was using a red dot on the M-4 and it has an 5 MOA dot that made it nigh on impossible to hit well at 120 yd's.

the Ruger had stock sights and they were kicking the butt of skeet targets at 120 yd's and that is with my old eyes.

fyi,I also fired the Ruger to see if I could get the failures that I hear about with them.

So far with a few hundred rounds of Silver Bear 123 H.P. they shoot VERY well and that is another 100 yard deer rifle that will see some woods time this fall.

Sounds like an issue with the optic, not so much the rifle or caliber.

Any day at the range is a good day regardless.

I need to read the internet boards more often; I've never heard/read that the Ruger Mini's were anything other than ridiculously reliable. I know the ones around here are. Good truck guns they are, and for that very reason. Now... I've heard/read many a posts about their accuracy or lack thereof, but nothing whatsoever about functional failures. Maybe there are issues that I'm just not aware of yet.

I agree, you really need to compare the rifles using similar sights.

I would be interested to see how the Whisper, Blackout, 7.62x39 and Wilson 7.62x40 compare ballistically, distance and hitting force.

I have been saying this for years the iron sites on an AR or the new minis are better then red dots and within realistic combat ranges the irons with a ghost ring are better then anything

CoMoRo at al

I agree that the optics were NOT apples to apples.

But was reporting the facts as they happened.

as to the failures of the mini 30 ,John farnam runs a ton of combat classes yearly.

he reports that those that show with a mini 30 have a tendency to not finish the course with their rifle due to failures too numerous to mention.

they are firing a great amount of rounds in a few days and the course simulates combat with little cleaning during firing daily.

I was a fan of the mini 14 for a few decades and when I decided to go the M-4 route it was noted that the M-4 was more accurate than the mini 14 I owned.

I love the feel & look of the mini 30 as well as the caliber,I am also a huge fan of the 300 BKL out as I like the M-4 platform.

The problem I have with the mini 30 is that it does not come with a picitinny rail to mount any & all optics I might want to T&E.

GGG makes one.

I say john farnam is a liar. these guys got sponsers and like gun writers they are prostitutes. a mini if anything will not let you down function wise

A 5 moa red colored dot laid over a smaller orange disk would be hard. Good shooting with the 'ol mini.

M1key & 68 - thanks

I will look into that 'rail' as that would do it.

And thanks for the compliment - I was VERY pleased with that as I had cataract surgery last year and that was dang good shooting for my 66 [ as of this sept ] year old eyes.

I look forward to more T&E ing of both rifles to see what will be the first to go deer hunting this year.
