THR Remington 1858 Club

Well, pardon the poor picture quality but my camera's battery is dead, I can't find the charger, and I have been waiting long enough to join the club. So, without further to-do, my Remington 1858 marked for Dixie Gunworks. I had planned to get a 5.5" Pietta but the guy backed out and this one became available. Honestly, I think I'll like this one better as I also have a Pietta open top Colt (also shown below) and I like the fit and finish of this one better than that one. And the 8" barrel balances remarkably well.

Here she is, certainly not the prettiest girl on here but she's beautiful to me. I have a set of unfinished maple grips that I bought for the Pietta I was going to be getting that I am planning to shape down to her size and properly oil stain so they look more original. I'll let y'all know how that goes.
406249512.jpg
Here are my two revolvers together, along with the rest of my kit. I decided to use my sporran that I wear with my kilt as my bag for powder horn, measure, grease, etc. The holsters are set up both right hand draw, one cross draw and one strong side holster. Not really planning on taking up CAS yet, though I have been invited to come try it out. I just don't know if I have the money for it just yet. We college students are not well known for having lots of money lying around.

I have two uberti 1858 carbines. Will they work?If so pics will have to wait until I get back home off vacation next month

Assuming you mean the 1858 revolving carbine (what else is there?), I would think they'd qualify. Looking forward to seeing the pictures.

Selfish.....

Well, being a member of this club for some time now, I just realized I've rather selfishly posted maybe one pic or so of one Remmy? I'd like to share a few more past & present, if I may....

Hey Capt. Kirk,
I bet you have an appreciation of the different handling/feel of the different makes of Remington. No two makers are alike. The Euroarms ara about as different from the Piettas as are the Colt Navies from the Armies. The Ubertis are in between. Piettas are heavy, over built strong beasts. The Euros are light weight easily pointed but no good for beefy hands. At least that's my impression from owning all 3 types.

You, sir, are correct!
I have smallish hands so fully appreciate the slim grip, lighter weight and smooth contour of the San Paolo's. But I have also come to appreciate the brute strength and heft of the Pietta's. And on a more curious note; I began buying brassers because they were cheap, shined up easily and I could turn them quickly, but began to really enjoy them. Brass is a ridiculously easy metal to work with; casting flash is whisked away with a couple needle files, 180 grit handles the rest. You don't have to worry about re-bluing. A dab of Flitz has the frame sparkling like freshly mined gold in a few minutes over your fresh sanding and blending work. In short, they are gems to work with and many can be had for around a hundred bucks off the auction sites. I had three Remmy brassers at one time and have sold two...but wish I didn't at times. The CVA was a jewel!

Remington Brassers

Wouldn't it be neat is they made available silicon-bronze framed Remington's? I've always loved the look and patina of bronze.
This thought brought about while dreaming smoking my virtual pipe.

You guys are killin me with the pics. I need a remington very much bad!I could do very well if all i had was a good remington revolver and a percussion dbl shotgun.Well, one of those little pocket rem. .31's to go with it would be cool too.

New (to me) Remingtons

For some reason there has been a run on 1858 pattern Remingtons at the local gun auction lately. For a long time the only Remington revolver I owned was a 1981 Pietta .36 New Navy, purchased new in '81:
00471_zps15375a13.jpg

A few years ago the husband of a high school classmate passed away, leaving a large and diverse gun collection. She had no idea what to do with the inheritance, so I cataloged and valued it for her; she then gave me, from the collection, a 1972 Armi San Paolo .44 cal Remington-Beals Army Revolver in excellent (but neglected) condition:
0043_zps969bd3da.jpg

Then just recently a funny thing happened. A very nice stainless steel version of that ASP Beals showed up at a local gun auction I frequently attend. This one was made in 1977 and was in excellent condition. Although I was at the back of the balcony it somehow managed to call my name, compelling me to bid extravagantly ($250!) and the next thing I knew it was in my hands on the way out to the car:
0002_zpsafc65c68.jpg

All by itself that wouldn't have been all that remarkable, but the very next time I went to the auction, another stainless steel Euroarms .44 Beals showed up, this one made in 1979 with target sights. Clearly a close relative, it wouldn't do to keep the two separate, so from my loft in the back I managed to steal this one for half price ($125); no doubt the crowd was influenced to hold back on the bidding by my heart-rending story of the two long-lost relatives seeking to be reunited:
0010_zpscd5e86b9.jpg

Now the coup de grace. Right next to the stainless .44, in a Dixie Gun Works presentation box, was a 1970 Uberti .36 cal Remington New Navy, the perfect companion to my original Remington. This joined the stable at a bargain price ($150) also, so now my first Remington has a family member living with it as well. Makes one feel good to bring long lost relatives back together, don't you think?
00469_zpsd25483c9.jpg

So, three new (to me) Remington revolvers in a couple months time and I now have 5. Planning a Remington Rave day at the range soon. We open to the public the first of May, and those first couple of weekends of the summer are pretty quiet so I'll have time to wring out the collection and find out just what makes Remingtons tick.
P4200483_zpsef290513.jpg
I may even drag long the ROA's and Rogers & Spencers for a 'top strap extravaganza'.

Yep. It's good enough for me.

My lovely Daughter got me one of these

for Father's Day.
I guess I'm in, not a bad place to be.:)
My first father's day gift (while my daughter was still hanging out in my wife's belly for another month) was an 8" RNA. Love thay gun. Got me into holy black.

I know some folks have been wondering about the new 2013 Pietta 1858's, and I tell you what, they are amazing. It feels like it has a slightly smaller grip frame, more like the original Remingtons, and that 1:30 twist barrel sure will shoot some groups, and locks up tighter than .... than something that isn't appropriate to describe on this forum. Only complaint is a hellacious trigger, which breaks right at 7 lbs. I fixed that though.

This was the first shot at 25 yards, after adjusting the trigger.

ResizedImage_1372375694059_zps926defa8.jpg

Put six shots into a 2" group at 25 yards.

Ordered my first cap & Ball yesterday from Cabela's. It should be here Friday. Its the Pietta 1858 New Army with the 5 1/2" barrel. I will post a picture as soon as it arrives!!!

I cant wait to take it out this weekend a shoot a few rounds through it. I have read as much as possible to gain knowledge and still looking more more!

What did you do to reduce the trigger pull on the new pietta? I have a 2013 one and would love to reduce the pull.
