P226 X-Five or Kimber Stainless Target II ?

I've shot regular p226's and they are great, and I'm sure the X-5 is sweet, but for a pure target 9mm, a good 1911 is hard to beat. I'm not a Kimber fan, but if you can afford an X-5, you could also get a S&W SW1911 Pro series.

I have shot kimbers in the past and they are accurate, but I am definitely not a kimber fan at all.

I would go with the Sig X-5. I have shot several Sig P226's and currently own one standard model. My 226 was used when I got it. The day I purchased it , it printed a 1.8" group at 25 yards with some junk blasting ammo. I am sure with some load development , it would do 1".

If you have the cash to spare and its CA compliant, I would look into a Sig P210. I have seen them in the $2,000 range. Hard to find a better target 9mm.

There are plenty of 1911 target pistols I'd look at before even considering a Kimber. Look at the Colt Gold Cup, various STI pistols, the S&W E-series, or even the Springfield Range Officer.

The X-5 will be just as accurate and more reliable than a 9mm 1911

It comes at a cost of being substantially larger and heavier.
Nice gun though and would certainly pick it over any Kimber.


Is the STI EDGE on your roster?

Side by side, the X5 recoils mo' smartly than a Kimber Stainless Custom II. Both are accurate and I've had zero quarrel with the reliability of either.

Never shot, let alone owned a Kimber 9mm. But I do own a master custom shop Sig X5. Shot it the day I bought it, shot like a dream with very little recoil.

socal, I've owned the regular Pre B CZ75 and the G34, both very good guns. I haven't owned any of the higher-end CZ Target/Competition models but have read that owners report very good results with them. I do have the 9MM SIG X-5 Allround and a Kimber Target II in 9MM. The X-5 is very accurate, and mine has been functionally reliable with any ammo I've tried. Same with the Kimber. I'd say the X-5 might be a little more accurate at 25 yards when shooting carefully over a rest. My kimber has a fitted barrel bushing, but no other accuracy work. My 9MM X-5 has, as I believe others have also reported, chipped extractors. The second extractor chipped the first time at the range. The first extractor may have also. That being said, I did not discover either extractor had chipped until at home, cleaning the pistol afterwards. I decided to bevel the extractors, as is done with 1911s, and reinstall. Still totally reliable, and no further chipped extractors. That is the only down side I know of with the X-5s, excellent gun otherwise. I have other 1911s in 9MM and have enjoyed excellent accuracy, comparable to the X-5, and functional reliability with all. BTW, I know 9MM 1911s are supposed to be unreliable, ( I currently have the Kimber, Dan Wessons and a Custom Springfield in 9MM ) but mine just seem to work with any quality ammo, to include my own reloads, ball, flat point, hollow point, NATO, +P, +P+...ymmv

I've been very pleased with the accuracy of my SIG P226 X-5 Tactical model.




CZ custom shop pistols may also be a consideration. Amost as accurate as my Tactical model and competively priced.


CZ 75 SP-01 Custom Shop Pistol

After shooting 100's of 9mm semi auto's, I've gotten rid of all but two of my target/range shooters. The X5 level 1 and a highly customized CZ-75 SP01. My other target/range shooters just paled so much in comparison they weren't getting any attention.

The X5 level 1 is very soft shooting and the adjustable trigger allows me to fit the trigger exactly where it needs to be on the pad of my finger without having to adjust my grip. All the upper level 9mm's I've tried were great, but after shooting the X5 L1 everything else has become second best in every way (accuracy, ergonomics, reliability etc).

socal, I fitted the bushing. I have some experience, gunsmithing tools, small milling machine, beadblast cabinet,etc. and often do some of the smaller jobs on my guns myself. I know Kimber takes a lot of flak, but the three 9MM and one 38 Super Kimbers I've owned were all accurate, reliable guns that broke nothing, even with +P and +P+ ammo in the case of the 9MMs. Well out of warranty, Kimber did replace a magazine for me once at N/C...
Shame the SIG P210 and STI 9MM are not on the roster. I have owned more than a couple P210s and never found anything more accurate in my hands when shooting carefully over a rest. If my STI Trojan in .38 Super is any indication, the 9MM version should be a very accurate and reliable gun too, at a very reasonable price, IMHO. I tried to find one of the limited run of Ed Brown Executive Target models in 9MM for sale but was unsuccessful. I decided to try a Dan Wesson PM9. The DWs are very well fitted, finished and accurate 9MM 1911s. Might they be on the Calif. roster?
