223 Wylde Chamber?

Way more important then the chamber is what rifling twist you have.

The Wylde chamber was invented to shoot .223 and 5.56 equally well.

But all that doesn't matter if the rifling twist is too slow for the bullet weight you intend to use.

Plus, every rifle and every barrel is a law unto itself.

The only way to find out what shoots best in yours is to do a lot of testing with different loads.

I would suggest in your search for the most accuracy that you don't even waste your time testing FMJ-BT military type bullets.

Your best bet is going to be ammo loaded with match HP or Ballistic-Tip varmint bullets.

You'll be good for pretty much any .223 ammo except for the really light stuff (and even may shoot well).

1 in 8" = 77 gr Nosler or Sierra

I just bought my first 223 wylde chambered barrel. 18 inches and 1:8 twist. I haven't shot it yet. The rifle will be finished on the 4th.
I've developed a 60gr VMAX over 25gr Varget at 2.250 col that is the most accurate bullet I have ever developed.....out of my Savage Axis that is. I'm hoping like hell this same bullet will shoot well in this my first AR build.

Try thinking of .223 Wylde as a match 5.56 chamber. It's designed to be able to shoot both .223 and 5.56 spec ammo as accurately as possible, but without having potential pressure issues that may occur if using 5.56 in a tight match .223 chamber.

As I understand it, the Wylde chamber will give better accuracy with .223 than 5.56, all else being equal. The best explanation I've seen is at the following link:

69 gr is probably the best overall choice for the 1:8. A longer 62 gr should work well.

My 2 bullet weights for 5.56 are 55 & 62 gr. Sounds like these are good to go.

They are good to go for safety and function, but it seems a little strange to be settling for ball ammo in a rather expensive rifle advertised for its accuracy. Which usually requires better ammunition than GI.

I've shot two different factory (hybrid) chambered rifles which were supposed to handle both 5.56 and .223 ammo but both blew primers w/nato spec ammo. Each rifle is a study unto itself.

My RRA with Wylde chamber and 1:8 twist likes the 75 and 77gr rounds the best.

It didn't really like the 55gr 5.56 bulk ammo, at least it didn't group all that well. The match-grade 77gr Federal would shoot under 0.4" for 5 shots at 100 yards.

If the mil surplus you are referring to is something like Wolf(which isn't really mil surp) with a steel jacket below a copper wash layer then yes, it will wear out your barrel faster. If it's a copper jacket bullet then no, not really. Hotter rounds do wear out barrels faster but I don't think this will be an issue with mil surp.

The 223 Wylde chamber has a longer throat designed to shoot 80 grain pills loaded long.

I've got one. It likes 77 and 80 grain; they won't fit in the magazine, have to single load them.

The longer throat means you might have some unpredictable results with lighter / standard length cartridges.

I had a heck of a time getting 55 gr & 62 gr to group. (If I recall, I gave up with the lighter rounds; haven't shot that upper in 5+ years now)

I have an AR with a Fulton Armory(Criterion) bbl, 223 wylde, 1:8, 20". This is my most accurate AR. I find more factory loads that are accurate in 223 vs 5.56. There are very accurate 5.56 factory loads out there, but not as many. My Wylde, 1:8 shoots good brass factory ammo, 223 and 5.56, consistantly accurate from Ae223 55gr FMJ to 75gr Hornady steel match. I have not tried any 77gr in this rifle.
