To Cerakote or not to Cerakote

Should I Cerakote my Gen 3 G19 or should I leave it alone?

I am considering trying another Glock 19. My first Glock 19 was customized before I even shot it. Needless to say, it sucked. It suffered 5 light strikes out of only 280 rounds. The only thing I liked about it was the look of the customization.

However, I was at my lgs this past weekend and I felt the tugging towards the Glock case again. I looked at another Gen 3 19 and had the salesman remove the trigger lock. After several pulls I realized the trigger was completely different than my first Gen 3 19. This one was substantially better. My brother was also with me. He too pulled the trigger a couple of times and he agreed that the trigger on this 19 was better than my last 19.

I went with the Gen 3 due to the slide's finish. I've been researching the differences in the finishes of the Gen 3 and Gen 4. Apparently, the finish on the Gen 3 is better than the new finish on the Gen 4 Glocks.

My question: Should I customize the slide on this G19 or keep it the way it is? By the way, this Gen 3 G19 is new, so there are no scratches, etc.
 
Would you buy a new car and then turn around and have it repainted because you weren't all that crazy about the original color. Probably not, as you wouldn't have bought it in the first place if it was that bad of a color or finish.

If it were me I would leave it as is with the factory finish on it. Somewhere down the road and many thousands of rounds later, then I would consider refinishing it if required.

Absolutely, if the paint I wanted wasn't available from the factory. Would and have.

As for the OP's question, it comes down to three questions for me:

1) How long will you keep it?
2) What will you get out of it?
3) What else could the money buy?
 
I voted no for the same reason I never bought a garbage compactor. Garbage compactors turned 25 pounds of trash into 25 pounds of trash ... just never saw the point.
 
I would Cerakote a 1911, or a CZ, or my LCP, or maybe a Hi-Power. There's really no point in Cerakoting a Glock
 
Doesn't the Gen 3 have a better coating material on the slide than the Gen 4? I'd think it would be best to just leave it as it is, and see it as "just a tool for a purpose". Have other guns that you are more interested in appearances. Like a good Hi Power!

It is hard to make a Glock look different. It still looks like a Glock.

Paint may be a remedy.

I'd pursue the Krylon suggestion. I like that idea enough, that I might try it (AFTER SOME RESEARCH)
 
I guess I'd leave it alone as finish and make improvements that might make it perform better. It's hard to envision a finish that would make a noticable improvement on function.
 
Tenifer and Melonite are both excellent finish.

Unlike Cerakote, it's not just a baked on finish, so I'd prefer Tenifor or Melonite over Cerakota.

I think putting cerakote over tenifor or melonite would be easier though. ;)

Kidding aside, if it's a new gun I doubt you'd need to remove the factory glock finish to cerakote (I could be wrong). I also doubt the cerakote would lessen the protective qualities or the base finish. If they are contrasting colors it might look really interesting as it wears though.
 
That's a good point Ed. I just assumed that the original finish would be taken off first. I'll look into it some more. Cerakoating over the finish might just be the ticket in making a boring looking gun into something a little less boring.
 
It's a Glock, it'll always be boring.

I don't like customizing my carry guns unless it's something I really feel I need or will improve the gun, like the beavertail I put on my Colt New Agent. That little sucker just liked biting me, so I fixed that.

But it's your gun and your money.
 
Is cerakote a better finish than the factory Glock finish? My gen 3 model 22 has the best finish I've ever seen on a gun.
 
I don't know, the finish on my Gen 3 G34 is wearing pretty quickly on contact areas with my holster. After only 2.5 months and about 15 competitions it is very easy to tell that I will probably have to have it refinished after about a year of use. But, I didn't buy the gun with the intention of keeping it pretty.

The finish on my Gen 2 G19 is actually holding up better than my G34 and I have had it and used it for considerably longer.
 
take a look at some of the other slide treatments, plating, like the various nickel plating jobs. I saw the other day a promo for teflon impregnated nickel for Glock slides for about $89 I believe. looked really nice
