PTR 91 pistol. Thoughts?

I have the Vector V51. It is a challenge to manage
and the fireball is impressive. Thoughts ? It's one of
the most fun guns to shoot that I have. Looks just
like this one:

Huge Fireballs & horrendous muzzle blast will do more damage to your serious shooting skills then you can ever recover from.

ALSO IMO:
The HK-91 roller delayed blowback action in a full size rifle is louder then any other .308 battle rifle I ever shot in the first place.

Too much pressure and blast coming out of the ejection port right next to your right ear with a rifle length barrel if you ask me.

I own the full-size version and I can't imagine trying to keep the pistol version on target. I agree with RC that it's a solution looking for a problem.

I do own guns that have no purpose other than range toys, but I enjoy my ears too much to shoot a pistol chambered in a rifle cartridge.

I held one and can't for the life of me understand how you would shoot it, let alone accurately. There is no place to hold onto and no way to use the sights to aim the thing. I say it is a gimmick SBR replacement and a bad idea all the way around.

The AK pistols are also hard to keep on target and useless as udders on a bull.
But, they are kinda fun.

I would say the PTR91 pistol would be a sweet SBR, but I'd rather SBR an AK pistol, or shorten the barrel of my Mini 30 to 16 inches. Way less noise and flash for the size.

Hmm, maybe if you replaced the barrel with a .44 cal barrel, and fireformed your .308 brass to take a .44 bullet.

These types of pistols only make sense if you plan to SBR them. That said, an SBR 308 with that short of a barrel makes very little sense to me. Many people argue that even 16" barreled 308s are too short from a velocity perspective. I do not agree with that per se. However, the velocity going down to 8" is unlikely to give much significant advantage over a 7.62x39 or 300 BLK. However, the ammo is more expensive and it will create more flash and blast.

If I ever find a good description of the details about how to SBR one, and if its within my gun-smithing skill range, I'd go for the 7.62x39 version. I really enjoy my Mini-Draco SBR. I wouldn't enjoy the price of .308 ammo in any SBR.

So you are saying a standard HK91/G3 stock would fit? That'd be great! Sounds too easy to be true about as easy as making an AR pistol into an SBR.

Wally- it should be that easy- a quick call to ptr to confirm should remove all doubt

The short barrelled 91's with the registered full auto trigggers are impressive range toys for sure and had a following early on with some smiths specializing in them in the eighties if I remember correctly....

Always was on my impractical list

Just remember- you lose a LOT ballistically, if that has any importance.

After reading this thread I want to sbr that and add a suppressor. Sadly, I'll have to make a trust first. Darn you THR for making want to spend my savings.

Actually it was olympic arms ar based pistol that took 7.62 x 39 all the steel core ammo that was cheaply imported and proved to defeat armor that did it.... if I remember correctly

A friend of mine has a Martini-Henry pistol that shoots .303 British.

Fun as a short barreled rifle. Even more fun is the 5.56mm version, the C93. I've for two as SBR's and they are great. Form 1, end cap off, stock on. Presto.

IMHO, all of these "pistols" are just SBR's in waiting.

I think that like the mini-Draco, this ship may have sailed. Saw a PTR pistol at today's gun show for like $1700 I remember CDNN used to sell them for ~$900 which was why I went the mini-Draco route for under half the starting price. But after shooting a 7.62x39 full size PTR rifle, I'd jump on the pistol at ~$900 to make an SBR out of it.

Probably the best deal I saw was a single converted Saiga for $799 among a sea of $850 WSARs, overall prices seemed a bit high but perhaps heading towards more sane levels -- lots of decent ARs for less than the WSARs.

IMHO downside of the 5.56 C93 version is price and availability of magazines.
