4064 or 4831

4064 burns too fast for 270 I would think, it really is a 308 grade powder. 4831 would be the best compromise but I have never personally used it in my 30-06 only in my 270. IMR4350 is well known to work in both really well if you can find some.

I agree 4350 is probably your best compromise to load both. BTW, why do you want to use only 1 powder for 2 cartridges when better results can be achieved by using 2 powders instead?

Well in reality I get my best accuracy with 4350 in my 270 (130gr) and my best combination of speed and accuracy in my 06 using the same powder (in 165gr), so if it works well in both by all means use it, if your son's 270 prefers a slightly slower burning powder 4831 would be the next powder I tried, it is the go to 270 powder for many reloading veterans.

4064 works in 270 but the 4831 will get it to its potential mo better

If you like shooting 180 grain bullets in the 30-06 IMR 4831 would be a good choice for both depnding on twist rates etc. Does your 06 have a 10 twist I would say go for it with 175 or 180 grain if your 06 is a 12 twist don't waste your money buy both powders.

Good Luck IMR 4064 has a long standing track record with the 30-06 and IMR 4831 has a long standing track record with the 270 win. Results vary from rifle to rifle.

I love IMR 4350 in my 30-06 shooting 150-180 gr bullets. I really stick with 165-168's, they seem to be the best all-around (and I have really developed a fondness for 168 gr Hornady A-max's, switching to 165 gr. SST's for deer). I like 4831 a little better on 180's and if I load a 190 gr. bullet, I definitely go with a full case of 4831. I like 4064 a little better with 150's.

FWIW, There wasn't a big difference between 4831 and 4350 accuracy wise when I tested initially. And I'm shooting a stock Rem 700 as well. The 4831 should serve your purposes in both 30-06 and .270 for moderate to heavy-for-caliber bullet weights.

I use 4064 quite a bit.
My Ruger #1 in .270 really likes the powder behind 150 grain Sierra Game Kings.
I also use the powder with great success in reloading for a couple of different rifles in the '06 chambering using 180 grain Remington CoreLokts.

The accurate line of powders are good. I have 3 lbs of AA 4064 that I have been loading out of, cannot tell a performance difference between it and the IMR 4064. Many times it can be had a lot cheaper than the IMR as well!

What bullet weights are you using or have you found any yet?

I'm guessing you decided not to use 4350 even though you have some.

You do realize IMR4831 is a very good powder for the 270 win but in the 30-06 it's only useful with the heaviest bullets and all are compressed loads with any velocity. You are limiting yourself using such a slow powder in the 30-06. Using 4350 would have been the best choice IMO since there is plenty of data for the 30-06 with lighter bullets.
