Today I shot my first capybara, after days of searching. But finally we found it (and a big one!). I used my 16 gauge shotgun, loaded with a 0.9 oz slug in the right barrel, and #1 buck in the left barrel. I first saw it looking at me and I pointed the shotgun in between his eyes, and shot him a #1 buck, right in the face. After that it jumped into water and tried to swim, but I shot him with the slug, and then it just sinked. With help of a friend we could bring him out of the water. What do you think? alfon99,

Are those good to eat?

There are a few people here in the US that have those as pets. According to one article they can be trained just like dogs :).

Thank you for the great story and the picture. Looks like that 16 Gauge took care of it good.

Just my .02,
LeonCarr

Yes, they are very good to eat, here capybara hunting is very popular and it is full of them.

According to the author of the Princess Bride, they would be classified as a ROUS - Rodents Of Unusual Size.

A guinea pig in the 130- 170 lb range. ROUS for sure. I've seen them in zoos, of course.

Is it weird to wonder if they make good pets AND wonder what they taste like, at the same time?

Good going. It's cool to see some of the critters others are hunting from elsewhere around the globe.

I watched a video where a fellow was going after those things. They are pretty wary in some areas where they are hunted hard. As most I can only compare it to our hogs, and if they are half as good, you done really well on that one.

Cool pic. I understand they are good eating. That's a lot bigger than any I have seen in a zoo.

Oh, I didn't know anybody else watches that movie!!!
Fencing, fighting, revenge, torture, too blathe...

Nice looking rodent, somewhat happy that prairie dogs aren't that size...
I would also like to know how it is prepared.
