Great Powders!

I never tried using the Vihtavuori powders before. Well, today I did. I was able to get n340 and 3n37. I loaded 50 rounds of each behind 230 grain RN FMJ. Shot them out of my Sig 1911 and Glock 30. They both were extremly accurate. 4" groups @ 15 yrads. The 3n37 metered nicely! They were a pleasure. Some guys load one powder and stick with that. Im an experimentalist! I try everthing that works. In stock, I have many of the most used powders. I just needed to tell you all these 2 are real nice!
 
They make great powders, but I'm sure a Sig 1911 can shoot groups half that size using Alliant Promo measured by a caffeine-overdosed monkey. :)
 
I'm not tring to disparage you at all, OP, but 4" groups at 15 yards certainly isn't enough to get me to go out and pay 30% more than I do currently to shoot much smaller groups.

That being said, if you really like the VV powders I would recommend that you buy up as much as you can, as the last I heard they wouldnt be available much longer.

I've shot Promo. This is bold talk. I've generally considered "forward of the firing line," or roughly 10,800 MOA to be doing well with that stuff. :neener:
 
I have to agree, 4" groups with a SIG @15 yards is hardly worth the additional cost. I get better accuracy from W231 and a few others.
 
I agree, they are excellent powders, and I use some of both. I doubt they are going away any time soon. I would hate for them to go away, but I'll have to hear something very credible on that one to start worrying about it.
 
Man, N540 and N550 are super propellants! If I could get RL17 I might give up the VV, but that stuff is hard to find. Hope they don't go away.
 
It would be sad indeed to see them go, especially for reloaders overseas.
 
If you read the article it states that one of four plants would/may be closed. I think the other three plants could and probably would keep the powders available, it just would not be made in the Finland plant.
 
i have a spreadsheet where i color code all of my different loads according to accuracy... 4" groups would be color coded red and i would move on to a different load...
 
I code loads with stars from zero to five. Zero or one star loads are poor, with not much hope, two star loads may just need tweaking, three star loads are good, four star loads are very good, and five star loads are rare. I sometimes give loads an extra 1/4 or 1/2 stars. A 2 1/2 star load has the potential of tweaking into a good three star load.

Good news about only one plant in danger of being shut down.

4" groups is great for a start OP- what were your group sizes before you tried this powder ?
 
VV n340 is one of my favorite powders for .45acp! All three of my guns seem to like it. VV 3N37 is a great powder as well, but I tend to use it for 9mm instead of .45acp.

If I can find it at a good discount (like with free shipping coupons, discount codes, etc.) then I grab it, otherwise I use something else.

As long as we're playing favorites, I bet the average Glock 30 will hang with or outshoot the average SIG 1911 in anything but a Ransom Rest. (The plastic frame doesn't necessarily go back to the exact same position each time. But when ur actually aiming with the sights, rather than aiming with the grip, this doesn't matter.)

Glocks aren't ordinarily known for accuracy, but Gaston messed up the G21 and G30. :D My stock G21 is my most accurate handgun, and that includes a 6" 686 with a hair trigger and a Colt Gold Cup with target sights. I have busted beer bottles at 75 yards, unsupported, with regularity.
 
Hey Steve , Glad to here you were pleased with the n340 . I've been considering trying a it myself. I'm agreeing with you that if I'm shooting 4" groups at 15 yards it a good day. I'm sure there are some excellent pistol shooters on this site. I think you may have given a few of them a chance to feel good about themselves.
