Looking for new CCW revolver

Ruger SP101. Proven, rugged, fits same holster as your charter. Next question.

I'd say ruger LCR if you look around you might even find one with laser grips for that price or just a touch more

But id like a snub nose .357mag under $650,so i ask.If u had to pick one to be your CCW,which & why?

S&W 19 or 66 in 2.5" will come in under that price. Well built, concealable, powerful. Maybe the best cc gun ever made. "I rarely carry, but when I do, it's [strike]Dos Equis[/strike] a S&W 2.5" 19."

I am looking for a SP101 3".

I'd look for a 2-1/2" Security Six if I didn't already have one.

I would buy either a S&W M640 or M649 in .357 Magnum. both are very good revolvers and weigh enough to make them shootable with magnum ammo.

Mod. 60 or Mod. 640.

I would go with a Ruger SP101 as my first choice and a S&W Model 640 as my next selection in a .357 for CCW.

All four of these are 357s and all are steel, no aluminum or polymer.

And all mine.

And two S&Ws... one a .38 and the other .357.



The .38 was my first carry gun and I still use it alot!

Secret Service grips are on the .38 and VX grips on the .357.

I'd go with either an S&W Model 640-1, S&W Model 66 with short barrel or Model 19. Any of those guns will cost less than $650.

The SP101 will work, but it has problems. It really should hold six shots. It's heavy. The crane is short and grip interferes with reloads (replace them). The internals are a great advantage and you can easily work on it yourself. The front sight is pinned so you can add a night sight.

Just a followup to my above post, I really like the S&W all steel J frame revolvers, I have several. Here are 2 of my carry revolvers. One is the M642 in .38 Special (alloy) and the other is a M640 in .357 Magnum. Both are great carry revolvers and so is the M442 (also alloy) which is my current carry.

Go with a 3" gun. SP101s are fantastic, especially with a Hogue grip. The difference in performance from 2" to 3" is pretty amazing, not only ballistic performance, but the sight radius really helps.

I tote a 3" Taurus 66, older gun I bought used at a gun show for cheap and it's a GREAT shooter. I've really come to like this revolver. It's a little heavy, over 30 ounces, but carries well. It hides well OWB with a long shirt over it even in hot weather. I like to carry it in a Hume JIT. I don't carry it 24/7, have a few pocket guns for that chore, but they don't make a .357 Revolver that I'd personally stoke with .357s for carry. The 12 ounce wonderguns ain't so wonderful when I pull the trigger. I can take some recoil, like .45-70 in a Contender, but that 12 ounce 340 Smith is ridiculous. The heft of my Taurus makes it easy to shoot well. I can say the same thing about the SP101 I had, but if I get another one, it'll be a 3"er. If you get a J frame, get a steel one. 24 ounces is kinda rough in the caliber, but it's one HECK of a lot better than 12 ounces! 3" K frames are sorta rare and expensive, but you can find the 2.5"er around. It was a quest for a 3"er that led me to the Taurus 66, a K frame sized 6 shooter. Price was right and the gun, even though it's old and has been carried and shot a lot just judging by the cosmetic wear and the wear on the back side of the Pachmeyr Gripper it had on it (from recoil), but it's a solid gun that times perfectly and has very little end shake. I'm quite happy with it. Taurus doesn't have the 3" as a 66 option anymore, don't believe. Why were there so few 3" K frames made? Of course, Smith only makes the m10 anymore. I found a nice stainless 66 Smith some time back with a 2.5" barrel I probably should have put on my credit card, but I prefer the 3" barrels even to 2.5".

If I was looking for a 357 magnum snub I would go with a Smith and Wesson 19 or 66.

Plus one for a 3" sp101, it is a good balance of power and concealability. With a Houge grip shooting .357's really isn't too bad, it's all I shoot in mine.

I have the SP101, LCR357,and a Security Six. I like the SP101 for IWB and the LCR for pocket carry. The LCR also works IWB when I carry a 442 in the pocket. I like shooting the Security Six (2" 357) and I would carry it but, it's kind of heavy because of Arthritis in my wrist and hand. I am thinking of selling it or trading for an older Charter Arms.

The primary question is pocket carry or holster carry?

For pocket carry I'd suggest a J frame sized gun: LCR or S&W variant; you can get away with an SP101 in a decent pocket holster. For holster carry, I'd look K or L frame S&W or Security/Speed/Service Six.
