Been shooting more at an indoor 100-yd range (nice!), and I'm starting to think my 77-grain and 69-grain HPBT loads aren't ideal for playing AR pseudo-benchrest.

What bullets would surprise me with their laser-like accuracy? I've got a 20-inch HBAR that gets the most playing time at that range.

For 100-200yds I use 68gr Hornady BTHP. I find 77gr SMK, etc. dont fully give an advantage until I go out to the longer distances. YMMV.

Try some lighter 55-60 grain Hornady V-Max, Nosler Ballistic-Tips, or Sierra Blitzking with the plastic tips..

It'll make you famous.

Many if not most of the gun tests I read in American Rifleman, etc, show 1/7 AR-15's giving best or near best 100 yard accuracy with 55-60 grain varmint bullets I mentioned.

The longer & heavier match bullets have not settled down and stabilized yet at 100 yards.

Ever have a wind-up Top for a toy when you where a little rug-rat that wobbled for a while before settling down and spinning straight?

Same deal with long heavy bullets.

Have to agree with RC. Also, the 40gr v-max with my Savage lightweight barrel is just about as accurate as you can ask for.

My best .22 centerfire 100 yard groups have all been with bullets of 50, 52, and 55 grains.
But my most accurate .22 centerfire rifles have twist rates of 1-9 to 1-12.

I think a box of 52 gr SMK would be worth trying.
That is what I come back to for all .22 centerfires for best moderate range accuracy.
Except the one I tried to make into a Long Range rifle, it needs the heavy bullets, even at short range.

You say your barrel is a 20" HBAR, but you didn't give the twist rate.

My 1 in 9 loves 55-60 gr boat tails.
Armscor works (they're even cheap)

My gun does not like Remington brand bullets

The 55gr Sierra GameKing HPBT Part #1390 has given me sub 1/2MOA accuracy @100 yards. It's the best 55gr .224" bullet I've found to date and with that good accuracy they can be used for target shooting as well as hunting.

My most accurate bullet at 100 yards in my Colt HBAR 1-9 is the Sierra 53gr MatchKing. It is a Flat base whereas the 52gr is a Boat-tail. IMO the flat base does a better job at short range like 100 yards.

Thanks guys. I think my barrel is a 1:8 twist. It's an RRA Predator
Something-or-Other upper.

I forgot how well the light V-max bullets used to do in my 308 at 100 yards. Same idea, I suppose.

I load 223 cartridges for an AR with a 1:7 twist and a bolt action rifle with a 1:10 twist. After trying multiple powders and all sorts of bullets I haven't found anything better than 77 gr. Nosler HPBT match bullets over RL-15 in both of them.

223 Rem.

Nosler 55gr with IMR 4198 or Hornady 68gr match with IMR 3031 in BHM brass.

I have Noticed all the 55gr HP FB (flat Bottom) are the most accurate for me... Dogtowns, Varmint Nightmares, Varmigedons, Etc all seem to be the best and most consistent for me

you'll just have to try stuff until you find something that works well for you. my 1:7 AR shot 55's best. My bolt gun 1:12 likes a 50 much better than a 55. But good luck finding anything cheap in those weight ranges these days.

Sierra 60 gr HP Varminter works just as well as the Sierra Matchkings in my 20" HBAR 1/9---fairly cheap too if you can find them in these tough times.....

Seek out some Fed. 50 Grain Tipped Varmint, AE223GTV.... at 100 yards it groups fantastic for "cheap" American Eagle. I have bought it for as cheap as $6.99 / 20 , and recently for $9.99 / 20.

+ 1 on the Federal American Eagle Tipped Varmint 50 gr ammo. It shoots very well in both my 1 in 8" 5R barreled S&W M&P 15 Sport and my 1 in 12" Remington 700 SPS Varmint. Pretty impressive velocity out of the 26" Remington barrel, too. Almost 3400 fps 10 feet from the muzzle.
