Hey guys, I posted here about 6 months ago looking for advice on starting to reload. Lost Sheep gave me some great advice and I checked out Kempf Gun Shop. After rereading ABCs of Reloading twice, and waiting for supply to loosen up, I'll finally be calling Kempf on Monday to place my order:D. Would someone be willing to check this purchase list and tell me what I may need to add or delete?

I will initially be reloading only for .45-70 Gov't and .45 ACP, though I will add calibers as I become more experienced (.38/.357, .30/06, .30/30 and whatever cartridge my next rifle is - probably 6.5x55 or .284)

My purchase list:
- Kempf Kit with Lee Classic Turret Press - Caliber .45/70, Pro Auto Disk Powder Measure Upgrade
- Lee Case Conditioning Kit - cutter, lock stud, primer pocket cleaning tool, chamfer tool
- Lee Adjustable Charge Bar
- Blueberry 400 Tumbler Combo
- Stainless Steel Dial Caliper
- Lee Carbide Deluxe Pistol Die Set - .45ACP
- Lee Factory Crimp Die - .45/70 Gov't
I need to add a scale, but I would prefer an analog one, which Kempf does not show on their website. I may source this elsewhere.

Thanks for all your help.

Good luck Old Brown Dog..I'll be ordering soon also. Watching this thread with interest.

Welcome to the sub-hobby. I personally enjoy hand loading almost as much as shooting. It is really great to read all of the posts on this and other forums about lack of ammunition and say to myself how glad I am that I started loading when
I did and also how glad I am that I stocked up on components before things got crazy.:banghead:

I remember your original thread asking about loading equipment. I am glad to see you went with the Lee Classic turret press, it's a great choice. When loading rifle cartridges I usually take out the auto-index rod and use the press as a single stage but with the turret you can very quickly change from one die to the next with the turn of the turret.

Did you order another turret to use for the .45 ACP dies? You will want a turret for each set of dies you load with, that's the whole idea.

Keep us updated on your progress. I'm sure you will do well especially since you have good tools to work with. (at a good price too lol)

Ok, thanks guys. I've added a .45/70 case length gauge and a turret for the .45ACP dies. I think I'm good to go and place my order Monday. Anything else (besides a scale - that Dillon unit looks pretty good) I need to think about adding?

Potatohead - I'll let you know how this goes once I get set up and running.

Congrats and Enjoy the new ADDICTIVE hobby

Its a lot of fun and rewarding for sure...

Just a question real quick. I will need case lube for sizing .45/70, right? I know I need it for bottleneck rifle cartridges, but not pistol cartridges, assuming carbide dies.

If you get carbide 45/70 dies its dont have to use case lube, but the brass will size easier with it. The lee lube is around 2.00 I think so why not get some.

The 45-70 case has a slight taper and there is no such thing as a carbide die set for it.

Use Imperial Die Sizing Wax. It's the best on the market and one tub will last forever. You will thank me for this advice. You can buy me a beer if we should ever meet face to face.

What bullet and powder do you plan to reload?

The Lee dipper cups work great for 45-70 with several powders. My pet load is a full dipper cup of H-4895 with the Hornady 350 grain jacketed bullet. Other powders work well too, Varget, Reloader #7, IMR 3031, you have many choices to choose from.

I'm going to try Hornady's Unique Case Lube just because I can order it from Kempfs right along with everything else. I'll pick up some Imperial when I get a chance. If it's as good as you say, you've got a Black Tooth Brewing beer of your choice should you ever end up in Wyoming.

I think I'm gonna start my .45/70 with Hornady 300 gr Interlocks. I would like to start with IMR 4198 or 3031 if I can find any around.

ETA: I'll start my .45 ACP with 200gr LSWC or 230gr FMJ and Universal or Clays

Don't forget to get your self a couple of loading manuals and you should be good to... except for Brass, primers, powder, projectiles
