Aresol oil

I'm starting to get some nicer guns in my collection, and I'm a little paranoid about rust because of my experiences with my SKS, and my shotgun. I hate getting it, I hate cleaning it off (because I've not had much luck with it in the past), and I really, really don't want it. I've been using a RIG rag on everything, but I'm not sure if you can leave it on.

So, for something that protects the metal, and is usable with a shooter, oil is the best thing. In the past, I've used Rem-oil. I'm not very satisfied with it though, because it seems like it evaporates quickly. I also have a little drip bottle of Hoppes elite, that I've been using, but I like the convenience of being able to oil everything fast, without having to use a lot of strategically placed drips.

I'm thinking of switching to Ballistol, which I hear cleans, lubricates, and protects from corrosion, but is there any better spray-on oil?

Rem Oil has worked for me for years with zero problems. I have some guns that may sit and not get reoiled for a year. Never had a speck of rust.

Kano Kroil in aerosol is the best i've found. As far as corrosion protection I use eezox. For me its worked better than everything else.

G96 is what I use for cleaning and rust prevention. Will even remove light surface rust if you use it with some 0000 steel wool. As long as it isn't pitted rust, it will come right off. The only problem is finding a store that carries G96 as it isn't as popular, so online is usually the best bet.

If you're really concerned about rust, a good wax like Renaissance Wax (or really any good paste wax like Butcher's) will protect your gun very well. Not a lubricant or grease, but if you're wanting to protect the exterior of a rifle barrel or receiver, it works wonderfully. Also fantastic on wood stocks. If you take the time to buff it out, it even makes your gun look better!

There is nothing better for long term storage then R.I.G.

You don't have to remove it until you want too.

But if you need too?
You are using way too much in the first place.

A RIG-RAG with just a dab of RIG in it puts on just the thin film you need to be using.

When I was busy riding a motorcycle in the NE US during winter, a common practice was to spray down the motorcycle in the fall with Lemon Pledge. The wax coating kept the salt and road spray from eating up the metal pretty dang well.

Oils or greases are good (and some are better than others, as rc's link shows), but spray wax rules.

G96 is good but as you said, hard to find. I got a new can today. It smells so good I want to use it for deoderant ...or just spray it on the floor and roll in it.

I think you must have G96 confused with Hoppe's #9.

Nobody uses G96 for deodorant.

Let alone roll in it.

That has to be Hoppe's #9 you were thinking of.

Negative. I must be the only gun guy in the world who doesn't like the smell of Hoppes 9. I did pickup a can of Rem Oil in a pump the other day to see how it compares to Breakfree/G96/Hoppes Elite.

I used to order 2 or 3 cans at a time from Amazon. I stopped by a new LGS a few weeks ago and opened their safe to find it filled with G96 cans. And for $10 less than Amazon without shipping. Now I don't have to use it as sparingly.

Renaissance Wax and Rig Grease both work great. These two containers will last me forever.

I don't like aerosol oils because of the extra cost or propellant and the can. Plus, it's hard for me to get a small amount instead of spraying oil everywhere.

For longer term storage I'm using Boeshield T-9. It's a thin, creepy liquid that seeps I to joints. When it dries it leaves a waxy film that protects metal.

For short term (under 3 month) storage I'm using my regular gun oils, either Aeroshell Fluid 18 or Royco CLP. Both have kept my guns from rusting when shot in the rain here in Oregon.
