I lived in South Carolina for several years and knew Ross Beard. He once introduced me to Carbine Williams at a gun show in Columbia back about 1962. Ross is a gentleman if I ever knew one.

That he is -- and a living, breathing history book. It's one thing to see his collection, but quite another to have Mr. Beard give the history behind each piece.

Thanks for the link. I'm about two hours from Camden, and I've never heard of this museum. I'm going to take my son tomorrow. It looks well worth taking the two hour trip to get there.

If you have the time stop in and check out the S.C. Military History Museum in Columbia. A portion of Mr. Beard's collection is housed there.

Melvin Purvis gave him his first gun when he was 10 years old--a Thompson machine gun.

That is just so right on so many levels, but will never be again.

Is the military museum free as well?

Wow that's an amazing collection! I remember reading about the air rifles that were used in the Lewis and Clark expedition; pretty neat to know that they're still around and available for public viewing.
