Greetings,

A LGS has a almost NIB Winchester 1300 Defender (5 shot mag, 18.5" barrel) with wood furniture and sling swivels for $275.

Is that a good buy? Seems much nicer that a new Mossberg 500.

Thanks,

Hunter

These days, with inflation what it is, seems like a decent price for these parts anyway. Used gun prices seem to be regionally influenced...

Depends on "your" value I would assume. These shotguns weren't expensive when they were originally manufactured anyways. I've seen a couple sell at around $200 and some people willing to pay close to $300 at various shows. I can't give you an estimated value since these are no longer in production. However, my personal opinion is that's a solid price for that gun.

On a side note, these guns do well in competitions I've seen.

Is it a Defender if it has a 5 shot mag? I thought the Defender model was 8 round.

A great price in this crazy world.
Fwiw I did a FTF transaction on a very clean 8 shot Defender 1200 three years ago for $265.
Buy it if you really want a shotgun for home/personal defense that a replacement barrel can be bought for a song to use on small game and bird hunting.

Well, if you think it ois much nicer than a new Mossburg you've made up your mind...

...haven't you?

I've seen them for $200 to $250 so I wouldn't think $275 is too bad if you like it. I've owned several 1300's over the years and I love the design.

I would not bother. LGS has semi-auto version of that with iron sights, extended rifled tube and scope in top shape for $399 which means about $375 cash. Five or six shots is enough and you do not have to work the handle.

My research found claims that the Winchester pumps were the only ones that reliably function with the Aguila or Centurion mini 12 gauge shells.
They are 1.5 or 2.2 inch shells, so you can increase your capacity. Also lower recoil, so they wont function in a semi.
of you try some, let us know how they function.
Congratulations!

Good to hear you picked it up. I would have gone for it too even at the asking price.

Really? Of all the competitions I have heard about, and videos I have seen, Winchesters are never ever mentioned. Rem 870s and Mossberg 500s make up 99% of the guns used.

I have an SXP Defender (Turkish hoopla someone called it) the successor to the 1300, that I really like and would love to try it in some kind of competition. I know there are almost NO accessories you can get for them compared to the 870. Fine with me, since about the only thing I might ever want is a single point sling.

The price you mention is not overly high, but Prices on used guns are usually asking prices. I would think you could talk them down a bit since it is a used gun.

Lou

These Defenders are now classic shotguns of the past era. I ve shot one before and its a hoot. The wood furniture is a big draw if you like that kind of looks.
