Okay, now my birthday is coming up. I told my wife that I want a Glock 17. She told me I need new dress shoes (a few pairs). She's correct in that analysis....I definitely need new dress shoes.

BUT, doesn't everyone need a Glock 17 too? In the overall scheme of things isn't the Glock 17 more essential? So how o I approach this issue? What arguments can I use to sway this gal? I'm befuddled........

My wife wouldn't get me a gun for my birthday if I gave her the money for it. So in Feb. 2012 for my birthday I got MYSELF a nice present in the form of a Gen. 3 Glock 19 brand spankin' new. Never was into Glocks until about 5 years ago when I used to play around with a couple at the range which belonged to other guys. Then they started to grow on me. Then I decided to get one. It's one of only two semi-auto centerfire pistols I own, (the other's a WWII bringback Luger I inherited from an uncle and everything else is either a revolver, a rimfire, or an Encore) and I really like it. I know most folks either love 'em or hate 'em but I must admit to becoming real fond of that thing.

Dress shoes . . . hmmmm.

To me, it depends on the cost of the shoes. If you don't wear dress shoes hardly ever, get a pair at a discount store like Ross, TJMaxx, or the like. They sell out-of-season name brand items, but you will have to hunt for them or make multiple trips to multiple stores to find what you need. If you have the time for the hunt, buying shoes from a store like that will run you no more than $60.00.

Of course, if you are buying shoes that cost what a new Glock costs, well . . . you're gonna have to get only the shoes.

If you need the shoes, and do not have money for both, buy the shoes. This kind of decision making can make you a happily married wealthy man some day.

As for dress shoes, I have two pair. The ones issued to me in 1998 for my dress uniform, and a pair of Dr. Scholls that I picked up at Walmart. Yeah, I'm cheap and don't wear dress shoes.

As for birthdays, I'm with 22250Rem, my wife wouldn't buy me a gun if I gave her the money, drove to the gun store, picked it out and said 'happy birthday to me'.

So I plan on buying myself a new gun for my birthday. Just not sure what. But I know what it won't be, a Glock 17. ;)

I agree with chiarones on this one get a dencent pair for under 100 And get that glock 17

So try this for an argument:
Shoes are to be considered a necessity of life, and as such we buy them as needed. Guns, on the other hand are a luxury and thus are much more in the “gift” area of life. Now if you (wife) are open to reversing these two “object” categories I will be happy to buy the shoes now and get guns as I feel they are “needed”!

I picked up a nice pair of dress shoes (Dexters), at one of the local discount shoe stores for around $30 (they were on sale and had an additional discount because I had to go to another store to pick them up).

So show your wife what a thrifty and smart shopper you are by finding an inexpensive pair of dress shoes and use the rest of your birthday money on: the Glock 17.

Sorry, I'm on her side. When she can go someplace without looking like a bum she may find it easier to consider the Sunday go to meeting handgun. :neener:

And before you say it, when hubby got home he had a brand new Remington 600 waiting for him. But then his shoes were shined.

Keep in mind, a happy wife can effect a lot of things positively... I know you have made me happy giving me cause for a gratuitous Kipling quote.

Now, if you must marry, take care she is old -
A troop-sergeant's widow's the nicest I'm told,
For beauty won't help if your rations is cold,
Nor love ain't enough for a soldier.

Or broke and unhappy.... :)

Without the shoes you may not be able to afford the Glock anyhow... So easy decision.

If you wear dress shoes for your job, a good pair of dress shoes are worth the investment. Of course, your resultant dress code might actually preclude the use of a G17, anyway.

A nice shiny Wilson Combat in a handmade leather holster, on the other hand, will match the shoes better. :D

I see both sides. Needs should take precedent over wants.

On the other hand, once my wife asked me what I wanted for my B-Day. I told her and she suggested something else. To which I replied, "If you're going to get me what you want instead of what I want, why did you ask me in the first place?" Now I just get an allotted amount to spend on what I want.

There are Police Trade-in Gen 3 G17s going for around $370 online... scan slickguns for it. I just saw it today. I figure if you have the budget for a new G17, then you could get a used one and use the extra $130 on a pair of nice dress shoes... or a couple pairs of 'ok' dress shoes. Compromise, right? Foundation for a successful marriage.

I don't know how good police trade-ins are... but if they are departments like the one around here... the guns have never been used. HA.

Just a thought... but if you need shoes... you need shoes.

I wear a suit everyday for work and only own one pair of BLACK dress shoes. That is all any man really needs to own. Arguably, a second pair in brown if you wear a lot of brown and green. (I hate brown shoes and only buy suits that go with black shoes/belts.) Buy a good pair of shoes though. You can get a nice pair of Ecco, Josef Seibel or Cole Haan for $200 or less. If you want to really splurge buy a pair of Jonston and Murphy for $300. If you want to be fancy you can even find Prada for under $500 online. (Although I don't feel they are really any better than the Johnston Murphy shoes in terms of quality.)

I like the Ecco brand the best overall in terms of overall quality and comfort. Believe I paid about $160 for my past pair on sale. They will last me about a year of daily wear for work and I am rather rough on my shoes.

I can't see the sense for the average person to spend $600+ (price of a new Glock) on a pair of shoes if it's not something they personally want to own.

Maybe your wife will listen to logic or compromise. Get a pair of Ecco in black and used Glock also in black. Then everybody is happy.

Shoes make the outfit. Take $100 out of the Glock budget - decent pair of black leather shoes will last a lot longer than the time it takes to replenish the $100 for the Glock fund, IMHO. Satisfy your wife and the Glock will follow!

With a few others here in not "needing" a Glock 17 - like SIG 9's myself, but also love my Glock 30...

Echo the Ecco comment. Good arch support.
