In this one I give up the folder and carry a 1.5" bladed fixed blade exclusively as EDC.

For six months.

Aww, that's awesome! :)

My boy Andrew ended up with one of my ECs and it has become the go-to family home surgery implement. Not a splinter yet has gotten away from that keen little point!

Great design and a very useful writeup. Many knife articles fail to test the knife in a meaningful way, but Sam's article was full of useful info. I wish more knives like this one were available. Well done all around!

Sam's article was full of useful info.

Thanks!

How is this for a tidbit:
We average between 6-10 items of canned food in my kitchen per week. For six months, nearly every single one of those cans was opened using my S-O DK-EC.

..and this:
Since I stopped carrying a folder entirely when I started testing the DK and carrying it as a neck-knife. I suddenly had something that I haven't had since I was a small child.
Access to my right front pocket as storage.
I ended up buying a LCR so I would have something useful to put in it. :D

I did a micro-sized one once as a trial and a way to use a small bit of steel I had left over.

Wish I'd taken a picture with something for scale, but the ball chain will have to do.

That ended up as a gift for a pal who hosted me for the weekend at a big shooting match and he's seemed well pleased.

Hmmm, I have a couple 3/4"x36" pieces of W2 that would make about 14 or 15 of those. Shame W2 isn't a great idea for a sweaty-duty neck knife, though a coating helps.

What is AEB-L?

This has a good general rundown:
http://www.devinthomas.com/faq.cfm
AEB-L was designed for razors, which need corrosion resistance, high hardness, and very acute edges. AEB-L has excellent corrosion resistance, in the same area as 440C or other popular stainless steels used in knives today, even though it only has 12.8% chromium.

Sam, let me know when you are readybto take orders. I am definitely interested in one!

sent from my Galaxy Note II.

Sam, you should instead make some skinny (less belly) Pocket Defenders. Those don't need as much rust resistance.

But make DKs first.

John

Not a bad idea! They'll be very slim, almost no belly at all. And potentially very, very pointy. Some folks would like that.
