I frequently carry a gun when I go out with the dogs at night. Dispatched the armadillo that has been tearing up the yard last Friday nite. I have a 90,000 candlepower Maglite rechargeable on a shoulder sling. If I run out of ammo with Bigfoot I can still put up a pretty fair fight with that light. I would need 10 infrared security cameras to cover everything outside.

So guess it's time to re-purpose another shotgun.

Goofing around in back yard at night by your lonesome can easily get you killed. I would not do that again if I were you.

Get another shotgun , cameras and stay inside till you know what your facing.

cameras are CHEAP, another shotgun is also cheap, your life is not so cheap. STAY inside until you have an idea of what is out there. There is a reason that S.W.A.T. and Special Ops guys always go in as pairs or teams.

I can't believe you took the wife's shotgun! as suggested you might also want to look into a security camera system. My brother relies on cameras, but I prefer dogs for security around the home. Cameras may be slightly cheaper to feed, but they ain't near as much fun and company. I'm sure that if I just had to see who was out there before investigating I could just pick up the phone and request the footage from the obammy administration.

I live in the country. I know all my not too close neighbors have guns because they shoot them frequently. I pull my target thrower back beghind the house about 150 yards and rip off 100 rounds or so fairly frequently, and I can go back another 50 and shoot the pistols or the rifles in the woods. I go outside at night on average at least twice a night to walk the dogs. I am alert, but an intruder is way way down the list of possibilities. I am much more concerned about skunks or snakes, and I don't want the dogs chasing a raccoon all the way to the bayou. And I really don't want to have to de-skunk a dog.
I don't know where you live, but the idea of sitting inside watching security cameras is inconceivable to me. I have been going outside at night checking things out for 50 years, so I guess I better stay somewhere where that does not pose such a big risk as you perceive.

Yeah, cameras are a good idea. They are cheap and getting cheaper. Also on you first point, there's nothing wrong with having extra shotguns.

Though guys are giving good advice they are not seeing that everyones situation is different. Some of us are very rural and may need to take care of our own. If the OP decides he needs to check his property then he makes that decision on a case by case basis. Those of us in rural areas can not have LE coming to check on things for us, unless we can report a real threat. Response times are in tens and twenty of minutes and sometimes they can not even come. My county has two on duty after midnight on week nights and if they are involved in a situation they are not coming because I think someone is on my property. They can not drop an active scene because of "I think". In the winter they may not even be able to come, yet Sleds are a common form of travel for thieves and anyone wanting to do some bad deeds during those periods.

So your post of a second HD makes me recommend you get a second shotgun the same as the first. No reason to change the weapon to something that has differnt controls then you primary. However if she is not proficent with your primary pump, a good idea for her is a 20ga coach gun. Very light, very simple to operate and very deadly. Just make sure she knows it is you coming back in

Yes, get a second shotgun. If somethng bad really happens, I would be more comfortable that both wife and I have shotguns.

I live in a rural area. I have to deal with possum on the half shell and furry banditos and foxyloxy. Not long ago I resonded to some excited clucking out I the hen house with an air rifle and was sure I scared off Rory who had been inspecting the door to the chicken tractor to figure out how to obtain supper and entertainment. I thought I missed what with juggling and handheld light and firing the air rifle......but he has not been back.

About two years back though things got a bit high on the pucker scale. Some neighbors had commented about some person that was borrowing things like motorcycles and tools and perhaps doing some peaking. There had been Sheriff's cars at a house or two on the drive home so there was some heightened concern. One of my children about an hour and a half after dark came to me to report that some one was in our back yard. I took my GR Mossberg 500 I had taken a Morrigan Consulting class with in hand and eased out the side door. Brain stepped back almost 40 years to an extremely OD green time period and I was one with the darkness. Hearing movement on the other side of the pump house I got low and back four feet from the cornor and duck walked in pie wedges to see what was behind my homes sliding glass doors. And there he was illuminated by the indoor houselights shining out the patio doors......a County mounty one each deputy with his hand on his unstrapped side arm.... fortunately facing away from me.

I eased back and placed the Mossberg on the BBQ grill before announcing my self. Turns out a neighbor had reported movement in their back yard and the LEO was checking out homes around the home that made the call.....un announced. His car was in the ditch out on the road so I had not seen it in my drive. We had a nice discussion and once I pointed out the Mossberg laying on the grill he seemed much more polite, he had missed it entirely initially and I had stayed well away from it until the opportunity to meantion it came up.

Once he was happy I was the home owner all was Okie Dokey......but for a few seconds there, PF 9.9 was in effect.

I liked my Grandfathers solution to out door stuff. He installed floodlights on each corner of his house and had a master control panel next to the bed that allowed him to turn on pairs as needed or off as needed. Not as elegant as cameras perhaps, but do able for us old crummudgeons for whom babbling on Gun Boards is about the hight of our electronic savy.
