Since the sheepish people are easily swayed by what appears to be good at face value, I propose that instead of using the term "assault rifle" when referring to AR's, AK's, etc. that we call them "freedom rifles" as how can a freedom rifle be bad and why would anyone want to oppose something relating to freedom?

If you can get all the media pundits to switch, I'm all for it, but heck, we can't even get everyone on our side to stop calling them assault rifles.

While I like the term "Freedom rifles," the next question would be, "freedom from what?" To which the response would be, "freedom from a tyrannical govt, etc, etc"

And their final reply would be, "Oh. You're one of those whack jobs..." And they're done listening to anything you say.

Since retailers are already calling them "Modern Sporting Rifles" in the ads, we could go with that for a general term for that class of rifle.

And, since the AR-15 specifically is the most popular rifle in the USA, we can call it "America's Rifle." That term even evokes a bit of pride!

I've seen "MSR" (Modern Sporting Rifle) used in print advertising now from major retailers. I'd say that's about as much of a re-definition as we could ask for.

Obviously the Assault Rifle moniker is incorrect, but I don't know any gun folks who use it to describe their AK and AR clones anyway. And I think it will be, well forever really, before the media stops using "Assault Rifle" or "Assault Weapon," regardless of what WE choose to call it, so I doubt there's going to be a sea change of public perception on the matter.

Or rather, there already HAS been a sea change. When I was growing up (not really all that long ago) ARs and AKs were seen by a whole lot of the shooting public, and ALL of the non-shooting public, as military rifles (literally only good for killing people, as I was told by a close family member), and anyone who owned them was either fringe-ish or an immature kid playing army.

Now that has changed COMPLETELY (from 10% acceptance and use among gun folks to 90%, at least) and across much of American society. When the largest general goods retailer in the US ... or world! ... sells them at their little sporting goods counter in most of their locations (AFTER the dark days of the no-guns-at-K-Mart '90s, no less!), it is probably time to admit that what folks are calling them doesn't much matter anymore. At this point we could probably start calling them "baby-killers" and it wouldn't much damage their level of acceptance in society! :) Heck, we've already co-opted "Evil Black Rifle" as a mark of pride rather than derision.

My Colt AR-15 is stamped SP-1 Sporter. About as far way from calling it an "assault rifle" as you can get.

All sorts of manufacturers call them everything but AR-15's. I guess AR-15 is less of a brand but more a term for any semi-auto rifle based on the M-16 platform. The therm "America's Rifle" I do like, it even meets the "AR." "MSR" works as well. But, when I ask "may please see that MSR on your rack?" I am usually met with blank stares. "Oh, you mean the AR." is the typical response.

I have no idea how you would effect such a change. I am not sure it would even matter all that much.

Standard Capacity Rifle or Standard Rifle with standard capacity...

In some states they only sell substandard rifles that have substandard capacity.

Those rifles are already renamed as others have mentioned with Sport Utility Rifle and with Modern Sporting Rifle taking over from there. I'm okay with MSR. It works well.

Other than that, I have thought of AR rifles as American Rifles and AR carbines as American Carbines. They are the Winchester 94 of the 21st century, IMO.

Freedom rifles for many like this .

Yup! The gun is the tool. The man is the weapon.

....

The conch shell? That's just for style! :)

AR for America's Rifle
AK for Automatika Kalashnikov

I dont know where i found this picture but kept it in my file for the cool factor (the AK is chicom with milled receiver). I guess it could be an actor of some VC propaganda.

I think we should just call it what it is. An AR15.... Changing the name treats the symptom not the cause. It IS and assault rifle, battle rifle, MSR, SUR, Home defense mechanism, whatever... It doesn't matter what its called. It is what it is and even if it gets a nice name like happy fun stick. The next time someone shoots someone with one you'll have to start all over.

Its and AR15, An AK47, A FAL, A SCAR..... That's what they are. Bending and twisting only adds to the anti-agenda. They call this whole anti-gun agenda a fight.... And that it is, last time I checked you'd rather be tough in a fight, not lay down and assimilate to the other side,

I kind of enjoy correcting the "know-it-all" masterdebaters when they say AR stand for Assault Rifle. All they really have to fall back on then is, "Well, that's not really the point I was making...", which I usually counter with, "It's the point that needs to be addressed, as your lack of knowledge on the subject of firearms should preclude you even making comments on the subject."

Ahhhh, the wonderful world of the English language. :D

We couldn't keep the media from referring to Americans as "red" when leftists have been referred to as Reds for nearly a hundred years. Even their flags have been predominantly red in color. So, there's little chance IMO, of influencing the media to change from high-powered assault rifle to anything else. It just doesn't fit the approved propaganda profile.

And, while we are at it, let's attack the "high capacity magazine" definition. A magazine for a Taurus PT-92 holds 17 rounds by design, for example. For that gun, 17 rounds is the standard capacity magazine. If we are going to use "high capacity" at all, then it should be a synonym for the "extended capacity" magazines for handguns that extend out past the handgrip because they hold more rounds that what the manufacturer designed it for.

I call mine a Homeland Defense rifle. Whether the enemy is foreign or domestic doesn't really matter. ;)

I actually like watching the media contort themselves over the term; they get so worked up over just the idea of an assault rifle, that I swear one of uhm is going to pee their pants...

The first ABC radio news report of the Navy Yard shooting I heard, I could tell by the tone in the mans voice that he was full of it about the "assault rifle." Do they really think people here in America are that stupid?

I am sure you have all heard the story about the boy who cried Wolf? I feel the same about O'Bummer; the man can not keep his mouth shut; he does not know how. Every time my wife sees that man on TV she goes to swear'n like a drunk Sailor; You'd swear she has tourettes syndrome.

That mouth of his is going to be his undoing; the rest of the World already has his number. The longer he keeps runnin that mouth of his, the deeper he keeps dig'n the hole; for himself, and the rest of those who support him.

Oh, one other last thought: the whole of the Earth knows about the armed citizenry we have here on these shores, and they fear it. Personally, I feel their is a reason why our Father in heaven abides this in us. And I am sure I am preachin to the choir here, but it is with great responsibility that we keep it this way

We have seen here of late even that blabberin idiot Harry Reid kept at bay over that fear. We tromp them with our votes: we have to let them know that our God and our guns are not to be touched. We are the largest voting block in this country. Keep your gun close, and your God closer...

Keep the faith my Brothers,
CC

Personally I like MDR (Modular Defense Rifle) or MDRS (Modular Defense RIfle System), because one the the great advantages of the AR platform is its "Modular" design. I am kind of shocked that mfgs have not focused on that to a great extent.

It’s all in the mind of the beholder and some minds you ain’t gonna change.

On these issues you ain’t gonna change MY mind:

Red States = Red Blooded American States.

Blue States = Blue Balled Can’t See The Forest For The Trees States.

MSR works for me also, but SUV (Sports Utility Rifle) has a nice tounge-in-cheek sound to it as well.

Unfortunately, so many people in the U.S. are dumb and can easily be swayed to one side or another by nothing more than advertisements and marketing ploys. The media tells people something is bad, they believe it. If we rename the AR something else that invokes pride or freedom or some other commonly thought of good concept, I guarantee you that people would gravitate towards our side. The cause of the problems is definitely the liberal politicians and the liberal media.

I see no reason to "rename" something so inanimate. From Modern Sporting Rifle/weapon, Personal Defense Weapon etc. Antis use these rename tactics against us calling them "assault weapons" "cop killer bullets" "exploding ammunition" "assault bullets" and the like. We do not need to be adopting their tactics for our own, merely we need to refuse theirs. Such as the difference between an "assault weapon" is only cosmetic features and so on.
