Ammo Prices!

With approx. 11,000 rds. of centerfire ammo in my home (bought since '09), there is no need to waste time looking for .22.

It was just a hypothetical question, as I've never been to an Academy Sports, except for the store in San Antonio east of I-35 (in October '08).

How many years could you shoot at a non-reduced rate with that ammo?

I'm paying less at Walmart for .45 hardball than I was online before Sandy Hook ($0.34/rd--I stocked up after the election but before Sandy Hook).
Edit: Correction. That is $0.43 for the Winchester at Walmart. I was buying estate on line for $0.34 before. I prefer Estate as it shoots cleaner for me.

.40 S@W seems a little higher as well but is getting close (paid about $0.279/rd)
9mm is getting closer to the $0.199-$0.216 I used to pay.

.22LR is still double or tripper the $0.04-$0.07/rd I used to pay.

Everything above is for Brass case, BTW.

When you can find those 100 round value packs of Federal in stock they are certainly a very good price.

I've bought 2,000 rounds of 9mm this week. Bought a case of 9mm NATO from SGAmmo and a 1,000 rounds at Cabellas today for $305 including taxes. That was a decent price back in November. The NATO stuff was more expensive but its also hotter and was more expensive back in November. I think the normal when the smoke clears is going to be pretty much what it was before.

Started thinking about my last post the last time I ordered 9mm I paid $209 for 1k of Aguila 9mm. So my memory was off on that. Guess I was thinking of the 5.56 I bought at the same time. Still needed the ammo though. I had stocks on hand but eleven months without an ammo purchase had depleted them significantly. But the prices are not down to what they were. Be interesting to see what the prices are wholesale.

Lately Cabela offers Herters 9mm ammo, only problem they stop allow to buy from web site even if you a long time customer, but leaving in IL. I lost because of that new rules several times.
You have to call and buy over the phone. Problem is you can see items in stock, but department that handles IL sale may not have it.
Very inconvenient...

I think it's time to talk to your state legislators about their ridiculous laws.

That's where the problem really lies.

No sweat man, don't feel embarrassed about questioning how long ammo could last (the truly paranoid seem to forget that they are not required to reply): maybe 1,200 per yr.
Most of it is reserved for retirement in about two years. But I've become even more distrustful of what could happen with unknown future high taxes or 'tariffs' on foreign ammo. Anything is possible after 2016....

There is no way to even estimate consumption of centerfire. Maybe dates of thrown away 20-rd. boxes should be logged on a sheet of paper?

Having read so much about the difficulty in finding .22LR. and not wanting to tread the dreary, worn path into those same stores which have no .22LR, the two beers I drank caused enough histotoxic hypoxia to motivate ordering a 1,000-rd. case of 7.62x39(!), just minutes ago.
My reserve level of x39 is 2,000 rds., and last month the SKS began to nibble into the edge of that. Some of us Don't pass the buck on "red lines"........

I too am concerned about the availability of centerfire ammo going forward. That's why I bought 10k rounds of .223 earlier this year and have it stashed.
I have 6k rounds of 5.45x39 for the '74. I have never shot the '47 and the SKS enough to really stock up on ammo but I am starting to stockpile a little of that as I find it at good deals. I have also begun to stockpile some 30-06 ammo just in case but I doubt I will keep more than 1k on hand at any time.

As I have said before I am good on everything but rimfire. I would buy at least 20k of .22LR if I found it at pre-panic prices and probably 30-40k. This extended shortage has shown me that I need two years on hand for 22, 9mm, and the above mentioned rifle rounds. I had enough 22 to last for at least a year and can stretch it until next April or so before I run out. We have gone to more precision shooting with the 22s rather than just loading up the 25 round mags and blasting away.

This morning my Walmart had more ammo than I've seen in a WM since last year. This was at maybe 9:45 am

The highlights include:

9mm Federal bulk, 100 rounds, $25.77. A dozen or more in stock.
.45 Federal Bulk, 100 rounds, increased to $38.77. Half dozen or more in stock.
Tulammo .223, $5.27/20, small piles in stock
Federal XM855, loose packed 150 rounds, $70. Not sure on stock, 6+

No .22lr this time, still.

Man, I'd like to snag a few of those Federal 100pks. I love that 223 WM tula too! They still have the 3 box limit?

They did. 3 boxes total, not per cartridge.

I got the 150 round pack of XM855 and 2x100 rounds 9mm Federal Bulk.

The Tulammo is a great price, but it is cheap/kinda crappy ammo...and only 20 rounds per box.

While I was waiting (and an employee got on the PA to call for somebody to unlock the ammo) three other guys showed up and got in line behind me.

"Surplus Ammo" sent me an EMail fall sale items today ...Remington GB 525 bulk pack on sale for $150 !!!...they are off my list as of today ...BTW my local WM sold me 3 of these same 22 bulk packs for $24 per box last Sunday morning ...what gives????

One of the things that gives is that, if I may guestimate here, 99.7% of people who go into Walmart looking for .22lr right now find nothing.

An empty shelf may as well have a $1,000,000 per round price tag under it.

I'm not sure why someone would put that price in any communication. Maybe "call for price and availability" would make more sense?
Hey if they can sell it for that then more power to them! Someone desperate for ammo probably should look at over paying for 100 rounds rather than 500 but it's not my money.

Today's sneaky, subversive, anti-social behavior during a tactical raid proves that your suspicions are verified.
The first trip to the brand-new local Academy created a very good impression which Bass Pro/Dick's can never match, and they allowed me to buy
two small 50-rd. boxes of CCI .22 LR. (plus two boxes of Tula 7.62x39-to complement the large case being shipped.) I did not notice any Russian .223.

My apologies for cleaning out the store, as stealthy subversives seem to be doing in Texas. This was in Collierville TN, east edge of the Memphis area. Now, my 2 & 1/2 "bricks" of .22LR can be kept in reserve. Along with the prices, the other good news is that they have a fair bit of these ammo types, and a decent bit of 9mm behind the cashier up front with the .22LR.

This Academy gun dept. even has two Bersa Thunder .380s! Really like their feel, trigger, accuracy and thin, small dimensions.
It's like a Polish P-64 but is fun to shoot.

We can always tell when another Academy opens because ammo like 22lr and 9mm stop coming in. So after 4 weeks we finally got some 22lr in, 10 boxes of federal auto match and 4 boxes of Winchester M-22. Every time a new Academy opens our ammo deliveries drop. So the new one that opened near you resulted is less to no ammo being delivered to my local Academy especially in regards to 22lr.

my LGS gets a shipment of .22s every Mon. morning ...this past monday he got CCI [4 cases] & [10] Rem. 525 bulk .. $24 otd for the 525 Rem ..don't know price of the CCI ..have never been able to get them to shoot in any of my toys....have been able to find .22s all during this so called "panic" you just have to work for them ...out of the 14 WM stores in my area I find 22s at one or more every week ...even bought Win. special edition bricks in wooden boxes at a WM cost $27...take care

BTW; Override, Southaven WM had two differant brands of 22s in stock this past Tues. & Wed.

And so the chain's purchasing dept. can never plan ahead with their ammo distributors for an increased supply, to cover one new store?

They must have opened more than one store in the last few weeks if such shock waves are felt way out west in Texas, or they send a much larger quantity so that a new store has plenty for a while, to create a nice first impression?
They did have what looked like over a thousand rds. of 7.62x39 in small Tula boxes on the main shelves, for those people also into these unfashionable guns.

If you ever come through the Memphis area (not in a rush), you will be welcome to shoot a good bit of my centerfire rifle ammo,
or a bit of rimfire. No kidding.

That is something that I've always wondered about but in today's world if ammo is sitting around the corporation is losing money.

Yesterday afternoon at WM I was surprised at all the ammo they had. I bought 3 boxes of WWB value pack 9mm though it's a bit higher than the Federal 100ct. The guy beside me asked what I was getting because they had 3 boxes of 380JHP and he wanted it. They also had WWB 50 ct. , several different brands of .40, a few boxes of 38, lots of 44, and some 45. By far the most I have seen in this WM for a while.

No 22 of course.

bought [2] 1000rd. Win. bulk [.22LR black nose solids] this morning at the local WM ...$108 OTD ....[2] box limit ...looked like they had 6 or 8 more 1000 bulk left & plenty of WB 9mm, 40 & 45 ...

Saw some 100 rd boxes of CCI .22LR at a show today. 22_ was written on the box end. Asked the guy if that was the caliber or the price.




It was the price.
